Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade, 1 Families,

We are now past half way through Term 4 wow it is flying by!

Let’s see the fun and new learning we have done!

Synthetic Phonics

In Synthetic Phonics, our students have learnt about the syllable division rule ‘consonant –le, count back three’ we split the word after the third letter from the end. This helps us read and write longer words with more complex spelling patterns. Our new heart words we have learnt are ‘island’ and ‘through’.

Reading

In Reading, we have just finished learning about Animals and their Habitats. This has taught us about living things and what they need to survive. We have explored various habitats, the last ones we have learnt about are the Animals of the saltwater habitat and Habitat Destruction and Endangered Species. This unit has also taught us how these animals and plants have adapted to their environment. Our students have been really engaged while reading and responding to their learning about this topic with their peers and teachers! We are now moving into our Fairy Tales unit, this is where we will look at different Fairy tales and unpack the different parts of Fairy Tales.

Writing

In Writing, our students have just finished the Informative Text unit. We have done lots of research on animals that we are interested in so that we can write about them. We even wrote about some of the animals we have learnt about in reading! It has been so fun to include so many interesting facts, you might like to ask your child to share an interesting fact about their animal’s diet, appearance or habitat! We are now moving into our writing unit Story Innovation. This is where we will look at familiar Fairy Tales and re-create one part of the narrative. We will practise recreating the setting, characters, or action in a story.

Maths

In Maths, we have started learning about Time. We have learnt about duration and what takes longer to do. This week we start looking into clocks and creating our own clocks, with these we will be telling the time to the hour and the half hour. You can support your child at home with this unit by asking the following questions: What number is the minute hand on? What number is the hour hand on?

Vocabulary

In Vocabulary this term we are learning the meaning of words from our serial text Fantastic Mr Fox. This text has great words for our students to use in their own writing and to build their understanding while reading! This week we have learnt the words ‘glum’, ‘quivering’, ‘ridiculous’ and ‘frenzy’ as well as ‘marvellous’, ‘feasted’ ‘spluttered’ and ‘chaos’. Ask your child if they can use these words in a sentence at home.

We had the best time at our Fairytale Fiasco Incursion! Our next writing unit is all about changing parts of stories to re-create our own. What a fun and engaging way to start out new unit!

Thank you so much to the Drama Tool Box, we had a blast!
