The Last Fortnight

The last fortnight has been a very difficult time for our school and our school community. The tragic death of one of our children and their father has impacted us all, albeit in different ways. For those in our school community who were close to the deceased individual/s, the news has been distressing whilst for others, it has taken some time to process. And even those in our school community who did not know the deceased have still had strong feelings about their passing. Our entire school community has profoundly felt the effects of this loss. The outpouring of support for the family from the wider community continues to be a source of comfort to all and demonstrates the generosity that exists in our community.  Our thoughts continue to be with the immediate family and those closest to them.

Remembrance Day

November 11 marked Remembrance Day- the day that World War I, the war to end all wars, ended. Unfortunately, World War I failed in ‘ending all wars’ as further battles such as World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan occurred. As we know from the events occurring in Gaza City, conflict in our world continues. Remembrance Day is a day where we stop, be still, and think about all those who have lost their lives or loved ones in conflict and how fortunate we are to live in a peaceful country.

National Survivors’ Day

Over the course of this week, you may have noticed people in the community wearing multi-coloured ribbons or you may have seen multi- coloured ribbons tied to letterboxes, verandas, fences and cars or other places of prominence. These ribbons recognise and commemorate the courage and journeys of survivors of child sexual assault and institutional abuse, their supporters, and whistle- blowers across Australia. They remind us that there has been too much silence surrounding child sexual abuse, and that we need to ensure the prevention of future abuse and provide more just outcomes for

victim-survivors, families, and communities. Each individual ribbon represents the voice of a victim of child sexual assault. Tarneit Rise Primary School pays tribute this week to

victim- survivors and their courage and strength in shining a light on those violations, so they can be prevented from happening again.

We are all responsible for the safety of children. Section 327 if the Victorian Crimes Act 1958 states that any person 18 years of age or older who has information that leads them to the belief that a sexual offence has been committed against a child under the age of 16 years by another person 18 years or older must disclose that information to police as soon as it is practicable to do so.

Please DO NOT approach other children in the school grounds to investigate conflicts that involve your child or any other child or to reproach another child or children. This is not acceptable. All adults, when on school grounds, have a responsibility to act in a way that maintains the safety of all children. Approaching, threatening, or scolding another child breaches this responsibility. Also, teach by example. Children need to learn healthy conflict resolution. Teaching your child to lean on you when conflict arises at school results in adults who cannot accept the consequences for their choices, and who inevitably blame others for their problems. If your child is experiencing conflict at school, go through the official channels. Do not approach any other child or children. They are off limits.

Let’s Talk About Periods!

The ‘Let’s Talk About Periods’ session was a resounding success on Tuesday evening! Thank you to all our Year Three to Six families who participated in the session. Your participation demonstrates your commitment to removing the shame and stigma from menstruation. Thank you for helping to stamp out period stigma!
