Central Idea: 

Wonderous Nature: Exploring, using, and transforming our natural environment into works of art.

  • Creating art from our environment.
  • Artists in Nature: Some famous land artists use nature to create artworks.
  • Natural materials are used to create artwork.
  • Shapes and patterns in the natural world create our art.

Students Will Create: 

  • Nature Collage: Exploring the works of Environmental Artist Andy Goldsworthy to inspire a pattern collage using collected nature from the school grounds. 
  • Large outdoor collaborative artwork: Identifying and developing patterns found in nature to paint fence posts, enhancing our school environment. 
  • Paper Sculpture: Using a variety of materials, colours, and textures to construct a paper seed pod. 

Japanese

Transdisciplinary Theme: 

Sharing the planet 

 

Central Idea: 

Living things adapt for life in their environment (in Japan).

 

Lines Of Inquiry: 

  • Different types of animals and their habitats in Japan. 
  • How people and animals interact in Japan. Popular pet animals in Japan. 
  • Japanese folktales about animals. The relationship between animals and Japanese people’s lives.  

 Key Concepts:

Learner Profile Attributes:

Students Will: 

  • Say some names of animals in Japanese.  
  • Tell what kind of animals are endangered in Japan and where they live.   
  • Describe the animals using adjectives such as “a big animal” and “a white animal”.  
  • Make animals sounds in Japanese.  
  • Sing Japanese animal songs.  
  • Listen to an old story of Japan (grateful crane) and think why Japanese people love the story.  
  • Enjoy a story time (Let’s go to the zoo!) in Japanese. 

Music

How we share the planet with other cultures and how music can connect us all.

  • Different types of music.
  • The continuation and development of music over time.

Students Will: 

  • Learn about how music connects those from different lands and different times through the singing of songs. 
  • Reflect on and become knowledgeable about multicultural music.  
  • Understand that music is used for different purposes and can communicate ideas and feelings. 
  • Sing songs connected to their unit of inquiry. 
  • Continue to improve their chime bar and note reading skills as they play accompaniments. 
  • Learn a multi-cultural social dance. 
  • Reflect on how music is used in different ways in our community and also reflect on these choices and changes. 
  • Perfect two songs to perform at the end of year Christmas performance. 

Physical Education

Central Idea:  

Creating equal opportunities to use various equipment and relate to specific sport-based games within our school environment and different communities.

  • Importance of sharing ideas on what games work in different communities. 
  • Teamwork in outdoor activities. 
  • Taking responsibility for the environment during outdoor activities using different equipment specific to the environment. 
  • How collaboration contributes to the enjoyment of outdoor spaces.

Students Will: 

  • Look at games that Aboriginal children play and learn to use equipment that is made from the environment. 
  • Use basic FMS to improve games with a range of equipment that can be kicked, thrown or rolled. 
  • Work in teams to play small games.  

Library

Central idea:

Living things live in different places where their needs are met.

 

Lines Of Inquiry:

  •  Living things live in a variety of different habitats. 
  •  An animal's habitat provides food, shelter and protection.

Key Concepts:

Learner Profile Attributes:

balanced and knowledgeable  

 

Students Will: 

  • Be exposed to books, both picture fiction and non-fiction related to living things and their habitats. These habitats will include rainforests, grasslands, desert, bush/forest, ocean and polar regions.
  • Discuss the different animals living in these habitats and what their habitat provides. 
  • Revise the different sections of the library and the types of books that are found in each section. 
  • Use language related to the Learner profile attributes in the library, such as being principled by showing respect to the books and people and being balanced by sitting and reading quietly at the appropriate time. 
  • Browse, read and borrow books of their choice. 
  • Explore books related to celebrations this term e.g. Halloween, Christmas.
