Students have been exploring the important skill of empathetic listening by learning how to listen with both their ears and their hearts. Through a range of engaging and hands-on activities, students developed an understanding of how active listening helps us to build positive, respectful and caring relationships with others.

A highlight of one of our lessons was our introduction to a yarning circle, an approach grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of learning and sharing. Sitting together in a circle, students experienced how this practice creates a safe and respectful space where everyone’s voice is valued. We discussed how, for thousands of years, First Nations peoples have used yarning circles to share stories, pass on knowledge, and strengthen community connections.

Through this experience, students began to understand that knowledge can be shared in different ways, including through storytelling, oral traditions and deep listening. They explored how these practices help build strong relationships and a sense of belonging within communities.

To support turn-taking and respectful listening, students were introduced to a yarning stick. This meaningful cultural tool helped guide our discussions, with only the person holding the stick speaking while others listened attentively. Students quickly recognised how this structure made speakers feel heard, respected and cared for, while also helping listeners to show empathy and kindness.

By learning to listen with care, kindness and respect, students are building essential social and emotional skills that support both their learning and wellbeing. They are also developing an appreciation of how cultural practices can guide the way we interact with and learn from one another.

Through sharing ideas and listening to others, students are developing important oral language skills in English, while also building their social and emotional understanding. These activities strengthen students’ ability to recognise feelings, show empathy and interact positively with their peers.
