What's Happening In Grade 6?

In Reading and Writing this term, the Grade 6 students have been exploring a range of persuasive and discussion texts. Students have been developing their comprehension skills by identifying author purpose, making inferences and analysing different viewpoints within mentor texts.

In Writing, students have been learning how to structure and create Discussion texts by writing balanced arguments, using evidence to support ideas and linking their thinking clearly between paragraphs. They have also focused on using persuasive language features, modality, conjunctions and effective conclusions to strengthen their writing.

Students should be proud of the thoughtful discussions, critical thinking and growing confidence they are showing during Reading and Writing sessions.

The Grade 6 students have continued to represent our school proudly during Interschool Sport this term. Students have demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and resilience while participating in a variety of sports against local schools.

Throughout the competition, students have been encouraged to support one another, communicate positively and apply their skills in game situations. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence, showing leadership and displaying respectful behaviour both on and off the field.

In Numeracy, Grade 6 students are learning how to simplify and convert fractions to decimals and percentages, which will be applied to financial concepts such as budgeting and dividing costs between people.

Grade 6 are also looking at measurement of time through timetables, and mass, before exploring 2D and 3D shapes.

Students should be proud of the hard work they have put in, and many are able to assist classmates with understanding problems.

Grade 6 students have started a Civics unit for Inquiry, which looks at Australian Democracy, the levels of government and the roles and responsibilities of citizens.

We have started with an incursion with the Victorian Parliament, the students were very respectful and asked insightful questions.  The students have formed a government and opposition to argue the merits and pitfalls of a student suggestion before taking part in a vote.

We are looking forward to our upcoming excursion to Victorian Parliament House, Treasury Building and James Cook’s Cottage on 27th of May.
