On behalf of the Year 9 team, I would like to extend my gratitude to all the parents and carers who attended parent–teacher conversations at the end of Term 1. These conversations are an important opportunity to strengthen our shared understanding of each student’s learning journey, and I look forward to working closely with you all over the next three terms.

It has been a strong and busy start to Term 2 for Year 9 students, with many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and contribute to our wider school and local community.

The Flat Pack Furniture Challenge

Mr. Frendo and a group of year 9’s head over to Morwell Tech school to complete the flat pack furniture challenge. The students had a great time designing their projects and using laser cutters to make them.

“During week 2, we attended the tech school to do the plat pack furniture design. My partner Georgie and I were tasked with making our own flat-pack furniture design. We made a Stool Table. While making the stool, we had to make two different prototypes. We had to use persistence & resilience while adding additional features to our design. After the two days, we completed our design, and we came 1st for our school.” - Lucas Y

Yinnar District Cross Country

During week 2, a small group of year 9s assisted our local primary schools with their district cross-country. The year 9 team was incredibly proud to hear how well our year 9’s went assisting our local community.

“Last Friday, a few of the Kurnai Year 9 students went to the Yinnar and District cross country and marshalled the course. It was our responsibility to make sure the primary school students knew where to go during the race. I was impressed by the effort of some of our local students”. - Jaxon B

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

As previous years, we will be continuing the use of Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPA’s), it has been fantastic to see students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. Keep up the great work!

Kurnai Aspiring Athlete Program

Recently, our Kurnai Aspiring Athlete Program (KAAP) have had two different guest speakers to help educate our KAAP students about living a healthy lifestyle.

“During week 2, we got the opportunity to learn from a sport nutritionist. We were taught about what is good for your body and what is bad. We also were lucky enough to learn about what helps you preform better during games, pre-game and postgame. We all learnt something to bring back to our local club.” - Lachy L
“In week 1, we had a sport psychologist come to school and teach us about mentality. He taught us to stay positive, and how to deal with mentally tricky situations in sport. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would be interested in learning more about sports psychology.” - Billy B

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne ran through the company DOXA. Students will get the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Eureka Skydeck.

The expression of interest has been closed. There will be no expressions of interest accepted after this point. At this stage, there have been more than 60 students who have expressed interest in the camp, and this will result in some students missing out. The following factors will be taken into consideration when deciding the best 60 students. These four factors have been discussed with students in every assembly. The following factors are:

  • Learning Behaviour Updates (LBU’s)
  • Attendance
  • Suspensions
  • Trusted member of our team

I acknowledge that the limited spaces available may cause some frustration for parents and students. If you have any questions, please contact me via email or call 5132 3700.

Art News

In Week 2, Year 9 students focused on poppies to coincide with ANZAC Day. Students explored the significance of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. They then applied this understanding by creating their own poppy artworks using watercolour techniques, experimenting with colour, blending, and brushwork to communicate meaning and emotion.
