Year 7 News

Welcome Back
We have had a wonderful start to Term 2, with students settling back in well and plenty already happening across the year level. A special thank you to our student spokespersons Jessica, Shaylah and Penelope, who represented the year level at the 2027 Year 7 Parent Information Night last week, sharing their experiences of transitioning to Kurnai College.

An extra special congratulations to Annie Bremner, Adelaide Cleaver, Beau Saddington and Oriana Schiafone, who achieved a perfect score of 4.0, a fantastic effort!

Year 7 Camp Coolamatong
With the Year 7 Camp at Camp Coolamatong fast approaching (Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd May), excitement is building! Students will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, including climbing and abseiling, low ropes, kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, combat archery, a boat trip to Ninety Mile Beach and an Indigenous cultural session, all designed to encourage teamwork, resilience and the chance to try something new. We are currently in the process of organising cabin groups, activity groups and all the finer details, and further information has been sent home to families this week.
If you would like further information about the camp, please contact our Camp Coordinator Mr Russell White or Year 7 Team Leader Mrs Helen Brown. If you require assistance with payment plans, please contact the school office.
Awareness Day
Kurnai College Churchill recently hosted over 250 Year 5 and 6 students from our local feeder schools for our annual Awareness Day. The day was a huge success, and it was wonderful to meet many siblings of our existing students. A special thank you to all staff at our Churchill campus and our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who contributed to making the day such a positive experience. The feedback received from both students and visiting staff has been overwhelmingly positive.
School Sport
Girl’s Football
Last Wednesday, the year seven and eight girls who had signed up for school footy got to catch a bus and compete against other participating schools. We drove all the way to Sale to play against the other three schools taking part in the event: Sale, Maffra and Lavala. Not all of us knew what we were doing or how to play but we’re all grateful we had the opportunity to learn new things and step outside of our comfort zone. Unfortunately, we only won one of the three games we played, but we all had a great time and are appreciative of all the teachers and bus driver who managed to put the event together. Without them, none of this would have been able to happen so thank you to all those who helped out. By Annie B
The Year 7 Boys football team played on Thursday this week. We will provide an update in our next newsletter.
Learning Tasks Published
At the end of Term 1, you may have received a notification that a learning task has been published. During each term, students complete Common Assessment Tasks (CATs), which are not tests or exams, but tasks completed alongside other learning activities throughout the term that showcase the skills they have developed. Teachers assess these tasks and the results are published to COMPASS for you to view. Unlike the learning behaviour updates, which report on behaviour, CATs are an academic assessment. Students will complete between one and two assessments per subject each term, published to COMPASS as part of our continuous online reporting. If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the classroom teacher.

Art
Year 7 Art students have been learning about the artist Albert Namatjira. They have explored his landscape paintings, focusing on his use of colour, tone, and distinctive style. Students are developing their own landscape painting skills and have begun this process by learning how to draw gum trees, building their confidence in observation and technique.
