Families play an important role in supporting children to develop self-regulation skills.
Some simple ways you can support at home include:
1. Name the feeling:
Help your child identify how they are feeling: “I can see you’re feeling frustrated.”

2. Stay calm and connected:
Children learn to regulate through adults. Staying calm helps your child settle more quickly.
3. Focus on strategies, not just behaviour:
Instead of “stop that”, try: “What could you do to help yourself right now?”
4. Keep routines predictable:
Consistent routines (morning, after school, bedtime) help children feel secure and ready for the day.
At school, we use this common language and shared strategies as seen in the poster. When this is reinforced at home, it helps students build these skills more quickly and confidently.
