Donations for Prep Garden
We would love donations for our Prep garden to support play-based learning. If you have any items at home that you no longer need, we would greatly appreciate contributions such as pots, pans, cutlery or sand toys.
Please only donate items you already have at home - there is absolutely no need to purchase anything.
Term 2 Specialist Timetable
CURRICULUM
*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.
Phonics and reading
We are learning about the different functions of s at the end of words. Students will first explore how s can show a plural and make the /s/ sound (eg. cats), and then learn how s can also make the /z/ sound in words such as bugs.
Our learning focus will include:
- Understanding the phonemes (the sound each letter makes)
- Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
- Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
- Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation
- Reading and writing 3 letter words using the sounds we know
What can you do at home?
• Support your child to read the decodable book in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.
• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.
•Review the letters and sounds we have learned so far using the cards below. You can also find these cards in your child's book pocket. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.” Ask your child if they can show you the cued articulation for the sounds.
•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet)
• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing
Our mentor text is Lethal Lizards by Gregg Dreise. Students will review the concept of plot by identifying the beginning, middle and end of the story. They will explore the character traits of the different animals, revisit cause and effect by considering how characters’ actions impact others, and reflect on the important message of the story.
In Writing, students will review the formation of previously taught letters. They will sound out and write CVC words using the sounds they know, and write short, dictated sentences. They will also use their lined writing books to have a go at independently writing their own sentences using a picture prompt.
What can you do at home?
•Practice letter formation previously taught letters (see the picture cards above)
•Provide activities that build hand strength and coordination, such as playing with playdough, threading beads or using tweezers to pick up small objects.
•Write some 3 letter words using the taught sounds (see the picture cards above!)
Maths
We are finishing our unit on part–whole relationships by exploring how numbers to 10 can be made from smaller numbers and different parts. Students will continue practising ways to make 10 using smaller parts, and we will celebrate the end of our learning with a fun part–whole spider craft.
What can you do at home?
• Practise breaking apart small numbers using everyday items (eg. “We have 5 grapes -how can we split them into two groups?”) and talk about the parts and the whole.
• Play simple games using fingers, toys or snacks to show different ways to make a number (eg. 4 can be 2 and 2, or 3 and 1).
Wellbeing
SWPBS
Our focus is to Be Kind when using the toilets by respecting others’ privacy and personal space.
Respectful Relationships
Students will learn about the importance of permission and consent. They will explore how to ask for, and give, permission in different situations, and begin to understand that everyone has the right to feel safe and respected. This supports students to make safe, thoughtful choices with their peers.
Cyber Safety
Students will identify trusted adults who they can turn to and explore responsible ways to seek help when they feel unsafe online. They will also review the S.T.O.P. strategy (which they learnt in our earlier Cyber Safety session) to manage feelings, take action and seek help online.
