Level 3 & 4

We are ready to jump into Week 4! It was sensational to see the sea of smiling faces during our Mother’s Day and special friends’ celebration last Friday. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and make it a memorable start to the day!

CURRICULUM

Literacy

Spelling

We have settled into our routines for PhOrMeS and will continue on our SFE journey. Silent Final E (SFE) has many jobs and Job 3 says that e goes at the end to make c and g say their second sounds, e.g. ce and ge.

We will continue to use a range of engaging and structured activities, to develop students’ confidence in breaking words into parts, recognizing and identifying familiar spelling patterns, prefixes and suffixes when both reading and writing.

Reading

In Reading, our mentor text is ‘Seasons’ by Aunty Munya Andrews and Charmaine Ledden-Lewis. This will support our learning about Aboriginal seasons; how they’re identified and what influences moving from one season to the next.

Writing

In Writing, we will be inspired by our mentor text to explore and better understand information texts. With a focus on structure, author’s purpose and vocabulary use, the students will develop an informative text about an area of the Kimberly Region.

To support your child's literacy at home, you might read do some research to explore the Kimberly Region. Encourage your child to notice the topic specific language that is used to describe the region, for example landmarks, flora and fauna.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, Grade 3 students will move to focusing on multiplication and division. We will build and further develop the student’s understanding of multiplication and division factors, and using arrays and visual tools to solve worded problems.

We encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.

Students in Grade 4 will begin work about decimals. They will begin making connections between whole numbers, fractions and decimals and their purpose. This will include work on using tenths and hundredths, and comparing, ordering and renaming decimals.

At home, you can help your child learn decimals by practising with money, measuring, and everyday activities. Ask them to read prices while shopping, measure objects with a ruler or compare numbers with decimals. Regular practice will help build confidence and understanding of decimals in real-life situations.

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

In Week 4 our Challenge Based Learning will continue to center around the guiding questions, ‘What does Country mean to Aboriginal people?’ We will begin to explore Indigenous ideas about seasons that consider environmental cues, such as changes in weather, plant life, animal behavior and celestial patterns. We will compare the differences in seasons and different Aboriginal lands that can acknowledge between four and thirteen seasons, rather than the rigid date-based seasons in European seasons.

At home, you can support your child’s understanding by having conversations about seasons as we consider them, why they may or may not be an accurate representation of what we actually see and what might be influencing this.

WELLBEING

SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

We are encouraging students to “Be a Learner” and consider how they can make the most of their learning time. By using our time wisely, we can ensure we are getting the most important things done first, before we move on to other tasks. This is a great topic for personal organisation and independence skills.
