Harmony Day

On Friday 20th March, we celebrated Harmony Day at school, and it was fantastic to see so many students dressed in orange to show their support for inclusivity, respect and belonging. The splash of orange across the school created such a bright and positive atmosphere, and it was a great reminder of the diversity that makes our community so special.

Across the day, students took part in a range of conversations and activities centred around the message that “everyone belongs.” It was lovely to see students engaging thoughtfully and continuing to build their understanding of the importance of kindness, respect and inclusion in our everyday school life.

NAPLAN

We are incredibly proud of the way our Level 5 students approached their NAPLAN assessments this year. Despite some initial technical challenges, they demonstrated impressive resilience, remaining calm, patient and measured throughout the process. It was fantastic to see the way students adapted and supported one another.

With NAPLAN for 2026 now complete, we are excited to return to our regular learning program and continue building on the positive habits and attitudes shown during this time. We thank our families for their ongoing support in helping students feel prepared and confident.

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been focusing on developing their inferencing skills. They have been learning to use evidence from the text, ask questions about what might be missing, and piece together information to deepen their understanding. Students are also building their ability to infer the sequence of events within a text and use these skills to respond to comprehension questions.

Alongside this, we have been working on describing settings using sensory language and strengthening our writing by using correct tense, and also experimenting with changing tense for effect.

Reading Log

Strong readers ask questions, make connections, and think deeply!

Please encourge your child to read for at least 20 minutes each night and enter this into their Reading Log. after a few hiccups with the Reading Log we have now managed to setup an automated system that stores the entries the students are making. This can also now be accessed by parents on their phones to assist students to complete log entries. The senior classes are maintaining a Senior Ladder for the reading done at home. The teachers don't have a concern who wins, we just want to support the reading at home as we know the benefits that are derived from this. But - we have decided to reward the termly leader with a treat at the end of term. Each fortnight we will publish the leaderboard as we have below. From this you can see what the reading is being done at home by each class, without naming anyone. You also have a fair idea what is happening in your homes. We are now working on the tech side to see if we can automate individual reports to send home to parents. More on this will follow in the fast appraoching Term 2

We've enjoyed reading their insighful reflections throughout the week.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been focusing on developing their understanding of decimals, alongside NAPLAN preparation. A key area of learning has been building quantity sense through the use of benchmarks such as 0, 0.5 and 1, helping students to compare, order and estimate decimals with greater confidence.

We have continued working with number lines to place and identify decimals, including extending our understanding to thousandths. We have also been revising how to compare and order decimals using place value knowledge and mathematical language such as less than, more than and closer to.

It has been encouraging to see students explaining their thinking and using appropriate strategies to justify their reasoning.

Inquiry

 The ‘You Project’

Students are concluding their Health unit in Inquiry with the ‘You Project’. As part of this task, they are applying their knowledge and research skills to design a two-week plan that reflects a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

This includes creating a weekly eating plan based on everyday and sometimes foods, developing an exercise schedule to build cardiovascular fitness, and recording daily activities that support their mental and social wellbeing. Students are also encouraged to consider the role of positive relationships and effective coping strategies as part of their overall wellbeing.

It has been good to see students approaching this task thoughtfully and making sensible, realistic choices in their planning. We look forward to sharing some of their work as the unit wraps up.

Warm regards,

The Level 5 Team - Michelle, Cazz and Katie
