Reading & Writing
Reading – Visual Literacy and Author Study
In Reading and Writing the last few weeks, students have been exploring how illustrations help tell a story through an author study of books by Bob Graham, including How the Sun Got to Coco’s House and How to Heal a Broken Wing. Students have been learning that pictures in books give readers important clues about the characters, setting and message of a story.
Throughout the lessons, students have examined how colour, perspective and different types of illustrations help create mood and show emotions. They have also looked closely at the visual elements in illustrations and discussed how these features add meaning to the text. Students practised sequencing events in a story, summarising key ideas and explaining how images help readers understand what is happening.
English – Grammar
Students have continued learning about compound sentences and how conjunctions such as and, but, so and or join two simple sentences together. They practised identifying compound sentences in paragraphs and writing their own sentences using their own conjunctions to connect ideas.
Maths
This week during maths sessions students have been learning to create and interpret maps of familiar places. This has included identifying and describing the position of key features on a map and following and giving directions between locations on a map. Students can now use a legend to identify locations and objects on a map and can use positional language to describe a path and give directions. They have used positional language such as left, right, forward, through, up and down.
For a fun activity, draw a 5 X 5 grid and give your child instructions such as 'go forward 3 spaces or move 2 spaces to the right', each time they reach the correct spot get them to draw a small pict
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students continued exploring Growth and Change by participating in a fun “Guess the Baby” activity. Thanks so much again for your support with sending in photographs. The children looked at baby photos of their classmates and tried to guess who each baby might be, helping them think about how people change as they grow.
Students also discussed different emotions and how our feelings can change over time. Through class discussions and activities, they practised recognising emotions in themselves and others and talked about ways we can respond kindly and support our friends.
