Overview of Learning

Grade 1/2 – Term 2 Overview

Welcome to another exciting term in our Grade 1/2 classrooms! We are looking forward to a rich and engaging learning program across all areas of the curriculum.

Literacy

In Literacy, students will continue building their reading, writing, and spelling skills through our Little Learners Love Literacy program. Grade 2 students will explore prefixes (pre-, re-) and suffixes (-ion, -ous), learning how these change the meaning of base words to support comprehension and writing. Grade 1 students will concentrate on the /er/ sound and its different spellings (‘ir’, ‘er’, ‘ur’), practising words such as bird, her, and turn.

In Writing, students will explore narratives through engaging texts. Grade 2 will study Fantastic Mr Fox, examining how authors describe characters and their actions. Grade 1 will explore Edward the Emu, Fish is Fish, and Sunday Chutney, practising adding detail to make their own stories more engaging.

Maths

In Maths, our main emphasis will be on addition and subtraction. Students will develop a range of strategies including counting on and back, using number lines, and partitioning numbers. In our non-number strand, students will explore 2D and 3D shapes, looking at sides, corners, and faces to describe and recognise different shapes. Students will also begin exploring measurement, comparing lengths, heights, and capacities, and using informal units to develop an understanding of size and quantity in real-life contexts.

Science

In Science, we will explore Chemical Science, investigating properties of materials and how these influence their uses. Students will compare and describe characteristics such as flexibility, strength, and texture. To support this learning, we are excited to have an incursion with Mad About Science, featuring hands-on activities to deepen our understanding of materials.
