Prep Overview of Learning

The Prep staff welcome all parents and children to the start of the school year, especially those families beginning their journey at Rosanna Golf Links Primary School. We look forward to an exciting, successful year together full of learning, friendship and fun. The classroom teaching staff and room numbers are as follows:

This Term's Learning in Prep

English

English is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening.

In Reading and Viewing, students will: 

• recognise and say the most common sounds for the letters of the alphabet

•recognise and develop awareness of vocabulary used in familiar contexts

•read decodable and authentic texts using developing phonic knowledge

•respond to stories and share feelings and thoughts about the events and characters depicted 

In our phonics sessions this term we will be continuing to build our knowledge of the basic alphabetic code by learning the sounds g, l, v, y, r, e, qu, z, j, u, k, x, w and ck.  

During our Knowledge Based Literacy sessions we will be delving into the book, "Come over to my house" by Eliza Hull and Sally Rippin, to build students background knowledge and vocabularly about our Humanities unit 'Me and My Family'. 

In Writing, students will: 

• draw pictures to show meaning 

• develop the understanding that spoken sounds and words can be written down 

• begin developing appropriate written formation of upper and lower case letters

• recognise that sentences are key units for expressing ideas

In Speaking and Listening, students will learn to: 

• listen to and respond appropriately to others 

• share about events that have happened to them with their classmates and peers

• interact in informal and structured situations, using appropriate voice levels and listening while others read or speak 

Mathematics

Mathematics is a component of the Victorian Curriculum which covers the learning areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement, Space and Statistics.

In Number and Algebra, students will learn to: 

 • name, represent and order numbers, including zero to at least 20, using physical and virtual materials and numerals

 • partition and combine collections up to 10 using part-part-whole relationships and subitising to recognise and name the parts

• count groups of objects and compare and order their size 

• sort familiar objects into groups and explain their reasons for their groupings

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics), students will learn to: 

 • compare objects including length and duration

• sequence days of the week and times of the day

• recognise, describe, sort & create familiar shapes

Humanities and Science

In Term Two, Prep students will complete a unit on ‘Me and My Family’. In this unit students identify the people in their families and how their families are the same and different to those of their peers. 

Prep Reminders

• Home Readers: Please send your child's maroon reading folder including the reading log and homework book every day. Please check these daily as important notices and work will be sent home in them and also remember to empty these of any work or notices daily. 
• Prep Assembly: This will be held this term on a Thursday morning at 9:10am in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and10. Please see the Compass note for more information. 
• Lost property: There is a Prep Lost Property tub located in the Prep building as you enter the toilets on the left. Any lost property that is left in the building unnamed will be placed in here. 
• Bikes/scooters: it is wonderful to see so many children riding or scooting to school. Just a reminder that bikes and scooters are not to be ridden within the school grounds. Please remind your child to dismount their bike or scooter at the gate and walk it through the school grounds.
