In Term 2, our young scientists at Yarrabing are exploring the fascinating unit of classification, focusing on Kingdom Animalia. They are learning how animals are classified and the reasoning behind these classifications, as well as the differences within and between various groups of organisms. This helps organise the diversity of life and is key to understanding the natural world.

As part of their studies, students are developing their observational and research skills by linking their learning to real-life examples. They are also using critical thinking to analyse the challenges zoos face in keeping animals safe and ensuring their well-being. This includes understanding the key characteristics of animals, which assists them in designing suitable enclosures.

As a part of their KLT, students are researching an endangered vertebrate at Melbourne Zoo to create a detailed fact sheet, design an appropriate enclosure, and investigate necessary enrichment tools for the animal. Their final submission will include a comprehensive report and a diorama showcasing the animal’s enclosure and enrichment tools.

This project not only enriches their scientific knowledge but also enhances creativity and practical problem-solving skills, providing students with a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the importance of conservation.
