English

Term Two has been a busy week in English classes with students delving into Julianne Negri’s, ‘The Secret Library of Hummingbird House.’ The engagement of our students has been utterly heart warming, as they have participated in a plethora of activities to develop a richer understanding of the text. The school community is eager to welcome our very special guest on Wednesday 15th May, as students will partake in an interactive creative-writing workshop, led by the author of the novel. They have recently begun planning and drafting their additional chapter or alternate ending, which will be due in Week Six.

Moreover, Yarrabing Secondary College was recently visited by a representative from Melton City Libraries. We encourage all parents and guardians to create a membership on their child’s behalf. Students can gain access to a wide variety of resources, including a wide array of books to loan. Upon requesting a book, you can set the pick-up location to our local collection point, Timbertop Children’s & Community Centre, for easier access near our school. Students may also access the electronic database of academic resources to supplement their research across all subject areas. Further membership information can be found here or via the Melton City Libraries’ website.

If your child is enjoying creative writing in English, they may enjoy participating in the 19th Annual Short Story Competition hosted by Melton City Libraries. 1st place will receive $300 in prize money, and a prize is also available for Best First-Time Entry. Short Stories may be presented in any format that contains text, illustration, video, voice, or a combination of these. Text-based entries should not be longer than 1500 words. Entries close midnight, Friday 12th July 2024. Terms and Conditions apply, accessible here.

Literacy

Literacy teachers at the college have been awestruck by the quality of students’ Reading Journals. Students are to be congratulated for the mass improvement we have observed this term, particularly with the attempt of a wider variety of tasks, and writing with greater depth and clarity. We are looking forward to reading students’ Writing Journals that are due in Week Five.

We have also noticed a rather drastic spike in regular reading at home this term. Staff would like to acknowledge both students’ efforts and achievement, and to also acknowledge the tremendous support of parents and guardians with monitoring their child’s reading habits at home. Students are more than welcome to continue borrowing from the college’s Mini Library, and are encouraged to browse the broader variety of books via Melton City Libraries’ online catalogue.
