Faith Reflection

Mark 16:15-20 - The Lord Jesus was taken into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God.

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus gives his last commandment to his disciples. He calls on them to proclaim the Good News to all of creation, and that all those who are baptized will be saved. Then Jesus is taken up into heaven, leaving the disciples to begin their mission.

I've heard an analogy about how we all live and build our lives. It was said that our lives are like making a puzzle – each of us is finding different pieces to create an image. Some of these pieces are our friends, family, work, and culture, all of which make up who we are. Equally, sometimes we find pieces that don’t quite fit in our puzzles; maybe it’s a job that doesn’t align with our values or a good cause that, unfortunately, we don’t have the time to support.

At some point in our lives, we need to step back and see what picture we are trying to make. This Scripture speaks to our vocation – the things that we do in our lives, which aren’t intrinsically about money but about what we believe in. As people of faith, we are called to live a life of vocation in helping those closest to us as well as strangers throughout our local community and beyond. But this is easier said than done. If we value living out Jesus’ mission, then we need to ensure that he is at the heart of our lives – the central puzzle piece. However, this means that we may need to change other parts of our lives to be true to this mission.

But how much are we really willing to give up to put Jesus at the center of our lives? Are we only ready to be a Christian when it only requires a minor change, or are we all in? How much are you ready to give up to help a stranger? Would we be willing to miss a train? Give money, even if it means you have to forego something? Speak up against an injustice even though it might effect your chance for promotion? The list goes on. This week, we are called to reflect on our vocation and how we can build our lives to be true to it. Or in other words – do we build our puzzle around Jesus or the other way around?
