Exciting Novel Studies for Year 3–6!

This term, children in Years 3–6 will participate in engaging novel studies as part of their daily literacy learning. Designed using an Explicit Instruction model, these studies will develop a wide range of literacy skills, including vocabulary building, comprehension, fluency, spelling, grammar, and written responses.

Each year level will explore a carefully selected novel that will captivate their imagination and challenge their thinking:

📖 Year 3 – Roald Dahl - Matilda

📖 Year 4 – Michael Morpurgo - Kensuke’s Kingdom

📖 Year 5 – Michael Morpurgo - War Horse

📖 Year 6 – Barbara Henderson - Rivet Boy

Through structured and interactive lessons, children will dive deep into these texts, discussing key themes, expanding their vocabulary, and refining their reading and writing skills. These novel studies will not only enhance literacy development but also foster a love of reading.

We look forward to seeing our children immerse themselves in these wonderful stories!

Homework Policy- A Meaningful and Targeted Approach

At Holy Cross, we value homework that is purposeful, reinforcing key concepts in mathematics and reading to support children's development. Our homework policy ensures tasks are targeted, age-appropriate, and designed to build responsibility and independence as children progress through the year levels.

Homework Expectations:

  • Prep – Year 2: Focus on daily reading (15–20 minutes) to consolidate literacy skills.
  • Year 3 – Year 4: Independent daily reading (25 minutes, 4 days per week) plus one maths task per week.
  • Year 5 – Year 6: Independent reading (25 minutes, 4 days per week) plus two maths tasks per week.

Homework is a shared responsibility between children, parents, and teachers. Our staff are committed to setting meaningful tasks, reviewing progress, and supporting children's learning needs. Parents play a key role in fostering a positive approach to homework while maintaining a healthy balance with family time and extracurricular activities.

If you have any concerns or need support with your child’s homework, we encourage open communication with their class teacher. For more details, please refer to the full Holy Cross Homework Policy

Promoting Safe and Responsible ICT Use at Holy Cross

At Holy Cross, we recognise the incredible opportunities that technology provides for learning, creativity, and connection. However, with these opportunities comes the responsibility to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) safely, respectfully, and ethically. We are committed to educating our children about responsible digital citizenship and ensuring they develop the skills to navigate the online world with confidence and care.

To support this, families have already received a copy of our Student ICT Acceptable Use Agreement for 2025 (attached below for your reference). This document outlines clear expectations for ICT use at school, including treating devices with care, accessing only appropriate websites, using respectful communication, and understanding the importance of online privacy. The agreement also emphasises the role of students in reporting concerns and making responsible choices when engaging with technology.

We ask that families take the time to read through this agreement with their children, discussing its importance before signing and returning it to school. By working together, we can ensure our children develop the skills and awareness needed to use technology safely and responsibly.

SunSmart Policy – Starting the Year Safely

At Holy Cross, we are committed to protecting students and staff from the harmful effects of UV radiation. With Australia having one of the highest rates of skin cancer, our SunSmart policy ensures that sun protection measures are in place during all outdoor activities.

Students and staff are required to wear broad-brimmed hats, seek shade where possible, and apply SPF50+ sunscreen, which is provided at school or can be brought from home. Families and visitors are also encouraged to follow these sun-safe practices.

For more details, please visit the school website to access the full SunSmart policy.

Holy Cross Uniform Policy & Its Benefits

At Holy Cross, our uniform policy reflects our commitment to fostering a sense of belonging, pride, and equality among our children. Wearing the correct uniform each day ensures that all children feel part of our school community, promoting a positive school culture and reducing social pressures related to clothing choices.

Children are required to wear the Summer Uniform in Terms 1 and 4 and the Winter Uniform in Terms 2 and 3. Sports uniforms are to be worn on designated P.E. and Outdoor Education days. All uniform items should align with our policy, including black shoes (or all-black runners) with formal uniforms and any-coloured runners with sports uniforms. Coats, while not requiring a logo, must be navy blue or black.

Beyond its practical purpose, the school uniform also has social and emotional benefits. A consistent uniform fosters a sense of identity and reduces peer comparison. It also instills a sense of responsibility and routine.

Uniform items are available for purchase online via the newsletter link or from the school’s uniform shop, which operates every Friday morning with the support of volunteers. Please ensure that all uniform items are clearly labeled and that children are correctly attired each day.

For any uniform concerns, please provide a written note of explanation to your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support in upholding our school’s uniform standards.
