Complying with Child Safe Standards
A central focus of our work at the APF over the past few years has been providing support to our members in addressing allegations related to breaches of the Child Safety Standards (CSS). This area of concern has become increasingly critical, given the heightened emphasis on safeguarding children within educational environments.
It is essential not only for school leaders and staff to be aware of the Child Safety Standards, but also to ensure full compliance with these standards in practice. Effective implementation requires ongoing commitment from all levels of school leadership, as well as a thorough understanding of the policies and procedures in place to protect students. This includes establishing a culture of vigilance, providing adequate training for staff, and ensuring that systems are in place to report and respond to any concerns.
It is crucial that schools actively engage in monitoring and auditing their child safety practices to ensure continuous improvement. Compliance with the CSS should not be viewed as a one-time requirement, but as an ongoing responsibility that is integral to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students.
The School Update of 21 January 2025, provided comprehensive information and an action list to help ensure compliance with the standards. We urge you to familiarise yourself with the requirements and ensure your school’s commitment to the he Child Safe Standards under Ministerial Order 1359.
