Year 9 Geography
Congratulations to the students who finalised their learning for Geography this Semester. We are proud of your outstanding efforts in your Assessment Task and Course Examination.
This group of students have had the opportunity to focus on the way of the future, specifically focusing on human impacts on our Biomes, and what can be done to source, implement and manage our food sources.
Year 9 have also completed a range of fieldwork activities, such as comparing different microclimates around the school, as means to compare abiotic and biotic factors for plant growth.
9W have worked on studying the role of soil in food production. Each group was designated to a particular soil type, and planted a spring onion seed. Each day, the tubes are watered to ensure consistency. The purpose of this task was for students to compare and contrast the role of pH and sunlight, in determining the rate of photosynthesis, and growth of their root.
As our environment continues to change, we must adapt in our methods of food production and use of natural materials to ensure we seek sustainable methods of production for the future. Whilst the idea of eating meat is often correlated with our Australian culture, and continues to remain a critical part of our economy, students were exposed to an alternative - plant based meats! In a blind food tasting, some students in Year 9 were given the opportunity to find the meat - disguised amongst pea-protein and plant-based patties. Additionally, they also had the choice to taste alternative milks, beyond cow milk. Not surprisingly, such ‘alternative’ products have less of an impact on our environment, using less water, and releasing less carbon emissions.
Great job Year 9!
Year 10 Geography
Congratulations to those students who completed Semester 2 of Geography, and have now finalised their learning of the Stage 5 Geography.
This term, in 10GeoR finished the topic of Human Wellbeing, students had the choice to research their own topic of social and humanitarian issues facing many countries and persons around the world. As part of this task, they then needed to design and create a board game to reflect their knowledge and understanding to others.
Check out their awesome games!
Year 10 Commerce
Well done to students in Year 10 Commerce who have recently completed their Stage 5 Course! What a huge effort of the two years to engage in topics centred around skills for employment, banking, living independently, business and recently, laws in Australia.
To finish off the year, students in Mrs Mulligan/Ms Kwasniak’s class completed a Mock Trial. Students were divided into groups, and provided with scripts from a 2019 Civil Case. Each student allocated themselves to a role - whether paraprofessional/legal aid, barrister, court officer, or script reader. This activity provided students with the opportunity to engage with the processes of a trial, and to pursue possible interests for future studies or career options.
I will miss you, Year 10!
Year 12 Society & Culture
On Friday 8th November, Year 12 Society & Culture students went to the HSC PIP Day. This annual event, run by the Society & Culture Association of NSW gives students the opportunity to learn from experienced Society & Culture teachers regarding the components of the major work. Students were exposed to the narrative of a 2023 graduate, who achieved a NSW Award for Excellence, as well as a cultural experience. Additionally, for the first time, they were given the opportunity to listen to an expert in her field, Dr George Carroll - who has recently finalised her PhD in Fan Culture. She spoke about how students can use their interests in Pop Culture as an inspiration for their PIP.
Hope you had a great day, Year 12!
