From the 5/6 Classrooms

Welcome to Grade 5/6 at Boroondara Park Primary School!
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to an exciting new school year at Boroondara Park Primary School! We are thrilled to have you and your child as part of our Grade 5/6 learning community. This is a special time in your child’s education, full of new opportunities, challenges, and plenty of fun along the way.
In Team 5/6, we believe in working hard and, just as importantly, playing hard. We aim to foster a love of learning, independence, and teamwork while making sure our students feel supported and valued every step of the way. Along with Literacy and Numeracy, this year students will engage in stimulating inquiry-based learning, exciting STEM projects, and important learning and life skills lessons through our implementation of The Learning Assets and Respectful Relationships program.
Term 1 Upcoming Highlights
⭐ "This is Me" – Exploring Identity: One of the highlights of Term 1 is our integrated unit, "This is Me." Students will explore their identity and the characteristics that make them who they are. They will consider the influence of media, role models, and peer pressure on shaping their identity, while also learning about the changes associated with puberty and ways to stay physically and mentally healthy. To celebrate their learning, students will create a self-portrait that represents their identity, which they will proudly showcase at our Art Exhibition Expo later in the term.
🔬 STEM – "Properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases": In our STEM unit this term, students will investigate the properties of solids, liquids, and gases and compare the similarities and differences between each state. They will design and conduct an experiment to test whether air has weight and volume, observe a freezing point demonstration, and explore how adding salt to water lowers its freezing temperature. This hands-on learning will help students develop scientific inquiry skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
We are reinforcing our Learning Assets to help students build strong learning habits that carry through from year to year. These assets—Collaborator, Communicator, Thinker, Researcher, Inquirer and Self-Manager—equip students with essential skills such as working with others, expressing ideas, problem-solving, investigating topics, and taking responsibility for their learning. By embedding these skills across all areas of the curriculum, we empower students to become confident, capable, and independent learners. We encourage families to discuss these Learning Assets at home, helping students recognise how they use them in everyday life!
😊😊Well-being and the Respectful Relationships Program:
At Boroondara Park Primary School, we believe that well-being is just as important as academic success. Through the Respectful Relationships Program, and a variety of well-being initiatives, we help students develop emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive relationships with others.
Throughout the year, students will engage in lessons that explore self-awareness, managing emotions, respectful communication, and problem-solving. They will also learn strategies to handle challenges, build confidence, and support one another in creating a safe and inclusive school environment.
These important life skills not only support students' well-being at school but also help them navigate friendships, family relationships, and the broader community with empathy and respect.
We can’t wait to partner with you throughout this journey. Stay tuned for updates, special events, and ways to get involved. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are here to support you and your child every step of the way.
Here’s to an amazing year ahead in Grade 5/6!
