Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day, Kilvington officially opened our Peace Garden. This was a vision of former Principal Mr Jon Charlton, brought to life by our dedicated Kilvington faculties this year.

We were honoured to have Jon join us for this special occasion and to share with our community the inspiration behind the garden and its message of peace and reflection.

In the morning, our students and staff paused to observe Remembrance Day, paying tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

Our 2026 student leaders also represented Kilvington at the Bentleigh RSL Remembrance Day Service, where they laid a wreath on behalf of our school. Lest we forget.

Thank you to all who worked diligently throughout the process and to those who stepped in at the last minute, showing enthusiasm and commitment.

A special mention to Sophie Zadja (Year 7, who was a committed and valuable contributor throughout our lessons, but was unfortunately unable to attend on the day.

While there were no podium finishes, our students certainly earned high praise from both the judges and your coaches. They should all be incredibly proud as they represented themselves and our school with excellence!

Tournament of Minds International Finals

Arjun Panicker, Deeksha Chandra, Viraj Martyn, Zoe McInnes, Bryan Huang and Sam Loft, Year 8

When we found out we were heading to Sydney for the International Finals of the Tournament of Minds (TOMs), we were so excited.

TOMs is an academic competition for Years 4 to 9, where teams of six or seven take on creative challenges designed to build collaboration, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Before the competition, we spent a full day exploring Sydney. The event itself took place at the University of New South Wales. One of the most fun parts was badge swapping, where we walked around meeting other teams from all over the world, swapping badges and stories. Seeing all the teams at the Opening Ceremony, with our names displayed on the big screen, was such a proud moment.

Our favourite part was the three-hour International Challenge. Locked in a room with no outside help, we had to create a solution to a surprise problem and transform it into a 10-minute performance. We played to our strengths – writing a Fresh Prince-inspired rap and building a puppet of our main character Dee’s dog, Dixie.

The Spontaneous Challenge was fast-paced and unpredictable. With only a few minutes to plan and one minute to present, it pushed our quick thinking and teamwork to the limit. It was nerve-wracking but so much fun, and we loved that it rewarded creativity, uniqueness and collaboration.

Earlier in the season, we competed at Regionals and State with a smaller team, which made time management tougher. We’re proud of how we adapted and pushed through (even if the barbecue defeated us!). By the time we reached the International Finals, our full team was back together and ready to give it our all.

Sydney and the International Finals were truly unforgettable. Exploring the city, meeting teams from across the globe and tackling both challenges helped us grow in resilience, creativity and teamwork.

We’re incredibly proud of what we achieved and grateful to Ms Bush and Mrs Whitehead for coaching us, and to Miss Barry for supporting us in Sydney. TOMs was an amazing experience, and we hope to take on the challenge again next year!
