Mathematics
In Term One students will continue to extend their understanding of the four proficiencies of Mathematics; Problem-Solving, Understanding, Reasoning and Fluency and how to apply these within their learning. We will start with students investigating data representation through surveying their classmates and using this information to create and interpret graphs. We they will begin exploring the concept of Place Value to deepen their understanding of the value of a number. This concept is essential for mathematical learning and acts as the foundation for many other strands of Mathematics. We will then explore the concept of addition and subtraction; with ourlearners making connections between the two concepts and developing increasingly efficient mental strategies to solve problems. Students will also investigate multiple strategies to solve problems developing their understanding and reasoning skills.
To support your child at home, you may find the following tasks helpful:
- Ask your child what their current SURF goal is. What have been their successes and challenges? What is their ‘next step’?
- Encourage them to engage in everyday mathematical activities with the family (adding up while shopping, counting items as they are scanned at the shop etc)
- Practice addition and subtraction recall facts
- Log into and use Mathletics
