Spotlight on the Classrooms

K-2

Kinder ~ Length

Length is usually one of the first measurement concepts students encounter. An understanding of length is crucial, as it is the foundation for building concepts of area and volume. Sometimes students can measure lengths without really understanding what a length is. Length can be a property of an object or shape, as in the lengths of the sides of a triangle or the edges of a desk. Length can be the height of a tree or a student, or it can be a distance, such as from the desk to the door, or from the school to the Post Office.

At this stage students need hands-on experiences with comparing length and distances of familiar objects and in familiar locations. Students need to first explore comparing items directly where they can pick up both items to compare them.

Last week, Kindergarten students had the opportunity to build their understanding of measuring length by direct comparison. Students made 4 worms and ordered them from shortest to tallest and longest to shortest. We shared these at assembly last Friday and then the children took them home.

Yr 1-2 ~ 2D Shapes Barrier Games

During Week 3, Stage 1 learnt about 2D Shapes. We want students to focus on all the features of shapes. As mathematicians, students' observations and descriptions help them to identify what is important.

Students worked in pairs. Each student had identical sets of 2D Shapes. Student A made a flat design behind the barrier. Student B asked questions to try and duplicate the design from the descriptions Student A gave. This was a fun activity that  emphasised knowledge of language and questioning skills.

Yr 3-6

Years 3-6 ~ Maths Mindsets

Yr 3-6 students have been studying Position in Mathematics and were able to conclude their unit with a partner activity on the oval on Friday. Each partner got to hide a packet of chips and then had to give directions using positional language to accurately locate them for their partner. Fortunately all of the students were able to understand their partner's directions to find the packets of chips.

Fizzics Education ~ Liquid Nitrogen Show

Report by Lucy Furner (Yr 6)

Last Thursday, we had Shaun from the Science Fizzics Education show come to our school to show us the wonders of liquid nitrogen. We all had a blast asking questions, watching him perform thrilling tricks and even confusing us at some stage or another.

He taught us about hot and cold, about chemical reactions and explained why he didn’t even have to wear gloves!

One of the highlights was when he poured a TON of liquid nitrogen into a bowl, causing fog to spill out everywhere! Even though we were so far away, when the fog reached us, we could ACTUALLY FEEL how COLD it was! If the fog was like a winter breeze, then imagine how cold that stuff actually is! Unbelievable, right?

Shaun also tried to fool us all by coating a green balloon in liquid nitrogen, and then pulling a RED balloon out of the bowl. Some of us were definitely confused!

In conclusion, K-6 had an absolute BALL that afternoon, and I’m sure that all of us will have wonderful memories to take home with us.

Thank you to the staff for organising this incursion for us, we appreciated it and had so much fun.
