In the Garden...

What a busy two weeks we've had in the garden! Mulching, weeding, tidying up. planting new seedlings and thinning others. We also cleaned out part of the chook pen and put in new straw for them to scratch around in. They were very happy chooks after that!

Gradually we are getting more mulch around the garden beds making them easier to walk on and look neater and tidier. Most children are now ready to get their wheelbarrow license next term, which is great news! All our seeds and seedlings are growing really quickly and it's exciting to see how many we can harvest produce from. Last week we planted rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, cauliflowers, cabbages and some more lettuces. This week we planted garlic and onions and were thrilled when we noticed that three of our celery plants had started to grow as we thought they had died! Great news!

It's been a very hard working and productive term for everyone and special thanks to our wonderful parent helpers!

In the kitchen...

Last week we honed our knife skills, cutting fresh beetroot and pears into julienne sticks to use in a delicious salad with mint, sunflower seeds and feta. Students also learnt how to use a grater safely to cook a zucchini and vegetable slice, when cooked, many going back for seconds, thirds and even fourths! Freshly picked figs were quartered, sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon and roasted, then served hot with ice-cream as a treat.

We are impressed by how many students are bravely trying new foods each week and discovering different flavours and textures.

This week we celebrated Easter by making scrumptious hot cross buns. Mmmmmm, yum!

Kneading dough is a skill and so useful for all sorts of bread recipes.
