Catchment excursion iSea iCare
Run down of the day
We started by collecting macro invertebrates at the Elster Creek, then classifying them according to how resilient to pollution they are.
We used a net to scoop them out of the creek then emptied them into a tub to identify them. All the groups found some sensitive invertebrates.
We then tested the water for PH, temperature, salinity (electrical conductivity) and phosphate levels. The salinity and phosphate levels were both high. The rest were healthy.
The Beach section was fun and very informative. The groups all had different sections of the car park, grass and Beach to collect rubbish from. They then discussed what they had found and ways to reduce the amount of rubbish in the environment. They learnt how the type of rubbish has changed over time.
The kids enjoyed it so much they went back to collect more from the beach afterwards.
It was a fun day, and we were blessed with the weather.
