Thank you Miss B!
This fortnight, we have introduced reading groups. As students reading levels have branched in different directions over the first half of the year, these groups allow us to challenge the students at their point of need. Each group begins with reading a book, which is pitched slightly higher than their take home books, and is guided by the teacher. The book is followed up with an activity which promotes a particular skill. Currently, some students are benefiting from taking a closer look at individual letter sounds, some are focusing on high frequency words and some are beginning to look at rhyming words.
The focus of these groups will change as children master skills and students will move groups if they need to be challenged in a different area. Once the class is familiar with this new routine, I will be inviting parents in to the classroom to participate with us during reading groups.
As discussed at our parent/teacher interviews, students are working on personal learning goals. Your child will be focusing on one of the following areas:
We are celebrating when we start to see improvement with our learning goals.
We have just completed a four week unit on subtraction. Miss B developed a sequence of lessons to help deepen students understanding of the concept. We began with drawing and writing number stories to explain our understanding. Students were then introduced to ten-frames and number lines to provide additional tools to help solve problems. This provides a range of strategies for students to draw on and encourages them to find a way that they feel most comfortable with.
Using each of these strategies, students were again gently stretched and challenged at their point of need. All tasks were open-ended and could be tailored to work with numbers to 10, 20, 30 and beyond.
A huge thank you to all of the parents for helping the children participate in our Book Week dress up day. Everyone looked fantastic! Please enjoy some photos of our cute little book characters.
Miss B has put in an enormous amount of work to get to know the students and support them in their learning. She has been wonderful to work with and we would like to thank her for all of the fun and engaging lessons she has prepared. Thank you and we wish you all the best Miss B!
Have a great weekend everyone!
