28th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B
This Sunday, we encounter a rich young man who approaches Jesus with a sincere question: "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" This moment is crucial because it reveals not only the young man's desire for something greater but also the challenge that many of us face in our own lives.
Jesus starts by reminding him of the commandments, emphasizing the importance of living a moral and upright life. The young man confidently states that he has followed these commandments since his youth. Yet, Jesus sees something deeper. He recognizes that this young man, despite his adherence to the law, is still missing a vital piece of the puzzle.
When Jesus tells him to sell all he has and give to the poor, He invites him to detach from his wealth and attachments. This is a radical call to prioritize spiritual wealth over material possessions. The young man, overwhelmed by this challenge, goes away sad because he has great riches.
This story teaches us about the barriers that can prevent us from fully following Jesus. Wealth and material possessions can often become distractions or even idols that pull our focus away from what truly matters - our relationship with God and with others.
Jesus then speaks to His disciples about the difficulty for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God. He uses the metaphor of a camel going through the eye of a needle to illustrate how hard it can be for those attached to their riches to let go and embrace the life God calls us to.
However, there is hope. Jesus assures His followers that “for human beings it is impossible, but not for God; for all things are possible for God.” This reminder is crucial. It emphasizes that with God’s grace, we can overcome our attachments and live lives marked by generosity, compassion, and love.
Reflection Questions:
- What are some things in your life that you might be holding onto too tightly?
- How might they distract you from your relationship with God?
- How can you practice generosity this week?
- Is there something you can share with others?
- In what ways can you rely on God’s strength to help you overcome challenges in your spiritual journey?
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to recognise the things we hold onto that may keep us from You. Grant us the grace to let go of our attachments and to seek the true riches found in serving and loving others. May we always remember that with You, all things are possible. Amen.
As we reflect on this Gospel passage, let us consider how we can open our hearts more fully to God and share His love with those around us in our community and in our world.
