Students from Years 3 -5 were given the opportunity to take part in solving a crime using forensic science skills. Mary from Education Interactives was engaging, informative and entertaining.
The storyline for the crime: An Auction House robbery seems to have gone well for a gang of thieves who have made off with rare coins, gold and jewellery. Later that day, the security guard from the Auction House is attacked on his boat and the police need help from the forensic scientists to track down the suspects and recover the stolen items. But when they are arrested the gold is nowhere to be found. What happened to the stolen goods?
Students looked for evidence by taking impressions of coins, doing toxicology tests, using a digital microscope, conducting DNA modelling, ultraviolet examinations, code-breaking, checking medical reports and fingerprinting.
The guilty person was identified and arrested and the mystery of where the missing stolen goods were was solved.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of using science to solve a mystery.
Einstein First
Einstein First – Burrendah Students have participated in this new program since its inauguration in 2023. Congratulations to Professor David Blair and his team at UWA for being awarded the Premier’s Science Award for “Science Engagement Initiative of the Year”. This category recognises initiatives that have made an outstanding contribution to community awareness, interest and/or participation in science in Western Australia.
Our Year 3 students have really enjoyed learning about atoms and molecules as part of this program.
