VSV and VSL

Virtual Schools Victoria and Victorian School of Languages

Norwood Secondary College offers a wide range of VCE subject options in all learning areas. However, Norwood Secondary College may allow a student to undertake a VCE study with Virtual Schools Victoria (VSV) in Years 11 and 12, or the Victorian School of Languages (VSL) if the following conditions are met:

  • The student has achieved a ‘Satisfactory Semester/Unit Result’ in their chosen English subject.
  • The subject is offered at NSC but there is a clash with another subject.
  • The student is able to work at their own pace (without other online distractions), create their own timetable and/or routine and is able to commit time each week to studying and completing work for submission. *Note: Students should devote the same amount of time to study in online classes as they would in each of their other subjects at NSC.
  • The student has achieved a ‘3’ or higher on their most recent GPA report for ‘Takes responsibility for own learning.’
  • The student is prepared to complete Units 1–4 of the subject. Students cannot pick up a new Unit 3 & 4 sequence without having completed Units 1 & 2.
  • The student has received appropriate course counselling with the Careers and Pathways Coordinator and has also received approval from the Head of Year Level and Senior School Principal.

*Note: Students are limited to one subject that is external to our offerings at VCE.

If in the event a student wishes to study a subject through VSV or VSL that NSC does not offer, e.g. VCE Philosophy, and there is no teacher support available here at school, then students are encouraged to seek additional support through the institution offering the course, or through tutoring/supporting seminars.

It is expected that students will take responsibility for their own learning in VSV or VSL by:

  • Completing all set work to the best of their ability
  • Participating regularly in face-to-face classes (VSL) or online learning (VSV) and submitting prescribed work by their agreed due dates
  • Obtaining all of the required learning materials, setting achievable goals and establishing a clear study routine for the subject(s)
  • Maintaining contact with their subject teacher using the preferred communication method of the school/institution
  • Attending and participating in excursions, seminars, and online collaborative activities (where practical)
  • Using digital technology in accordance with the school and Department of Education’s guidelines.

*Note: Course selection must be completed with the understanding that any application to study with VSV or VSL may not be successful and therefore, another VCE subject must be selected in the interim.

If, in the event, that a student wishes to withdraw from a subject at Year 12, then the VSV subject will be considered first as the subject to be removed from the student’s timetable.

Student performance will be regularly monitored by the relevant Head of Year Level.
