The Feast of the Assumption of Mary

15th August

As a community, on Thursday, we celebrated the feast day of Mary’s assumption into heaven. The image above is an artwork from Christina Yambeing, an artist from the Northern Territory. The image is from when the angel came and spoke to Mary about how she was to have a baby and name him Jesus. In the artwork Christina balanced the wonder and obedience of Mary when she was told she was going to be the Mother of the Son of God. The artwork also incorporates the outstretched arms of Mary to illustrate her willingness and the angel Gabriel’s wings as a symbol of protection.

'The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. You must call Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God.’ Luke 1:30-32
