Year 7 News

After our eventful start to this week, students will be working on their Common Assessment Task’s (CATs) in English, Science, Humanities and Maths. CATs are not a test; they do not require test conditions, and some CATs even include experiments and research projects. These CATs are just summative tasks, this means the content and the tasks that students are required to complete are similar if not the same as other tasks they have completed throughout the term.
CAT’s enable teachers to evaluate the teaching and learning program delivered throughout the term and the level of learning students have achieved throughout the unit of study. Every term, teachers from both Morwell and Churchill campuses come together to discuss the overall CAT results from the classes and analyse what areas students have achieved well and what area’s we as classroom teachers need to focus on developing further.
Uniform
We have seen an increase in black tracksuit pants over the recent weeks and understand it is difficult to get uniform dry, especially without power! We have uniform available for students if they need to borrow some or even if they just need an extra set in the cupboard, please let us know if you need help with school uniform.
Attendance
We have seen a decline in attendance and understand this cooler weather is a breeding ground for bugs, colds and flu's. Please remember to enter an attendance note into COMPASS if your child is absent or attending appointments. If you are concerned your child is falling behind or missing out on critical work, please feel free to email their teachers and ask for work that can be completed at home.
Thinking Olympics
Beginning next Wednesday year 7’s will be competing against one another in the “Thinking Olympics”, an annual tradition in year 7 whereby students work in small groups and represent countries, competing against each other for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in their events. The students will complete a range of abstract and critical thinking tasks that require a variety of skills including thinking and listening, problem solving, creative thinking, interpersonal development, resilience and collaboration. Each day we will have a medal tally and announce the winners of the events which will be on display in the year 7 Centre. Good Luck to all countries and may the best team win!
Respectful Relationships
This week during our homegroup and TR@K time, students will be focusing on building respectful relationships. Our focus this week is: Emotional Literacy, Positive Self Talk, Coping Strategies, Problem Solving and Seeking help. These will continue to be our focus going into next term during homegroup to continue to develop students’ resilience and confidence in the classroom and in the yard.
