School of Foundations

From the Head of School

Welcome to the Term 3, Week 6 edition of The Net.

Last week we celebrated Book Week. Congratulations to all the students (and staff) who embraced the celebration with so much energy and enthusiasm.

Our K-4 teachers and support staff certainly know a

“THING or 2 about teaching!”.

Responding to Behaviour:

Did you know…

Approximately 90% of an iceberg is underwater and we see a mere 10% above. At St Luke’s we understand that a behaviour is what we see happening above the surface, but there can be many things going on for our students below the surface that can impact their choices and actions.

We respond to the behaviour that we see, as well as diving deeper to explore the why. To assist us we collect data. This enables us to look for patterns of behaviour at multiple levels, it may be at an individual level or a grade level. For example our data may show that there are issues happening in the Adventure Playground for a particular grade every Wednesday. Having access to this data enables us to look for a solution to the cause of the problem. It may be something as simple as adjusting the play timetable to help set them up for success.

Zones of Regulation

“Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it”.

Charles Swindoll

“The Zones framework provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs, and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts.”

Thank you for your continued support as in partnership we can achieve great things for our children.

KINDERGARTEN

English

In English, Kindergarten students have been learning to write stories. We have learnt that a story includes characters, setting, a problem and a solution. During this time we have also been learning to edit our work, by checking to see if we needed to add full stops, capital letters and adjectives, to make our writing interesting.

Maths

In Mathematics, Kindergarten students have been learning to form groups. Students have been using concrete materials to show how they can share items one by one, share the items into smaller groups equally and record their thinking using pictures and a number sentence.

Religion

In Religion we have been unpacking the Scripture passage Matthew 25:35-40. Specifically focusing on “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” and how we can use this in our everyday life, and in relation to those in Mongolia. Students have been engaged in activities to allow them to understand what life is like in Mongolia.

Science

In Science, students have been discussing the question ‘What do living things need? They have also been comparing the needs of animals such as chickens to the needs of insects. Students have also been exploring which living things meet the needs of each other by identifying which products come from a plant or an animal.

Stage 1

English

In English, students have been focusing on persuasive writing, learning how to express their opinions effectively and contrast procedural texts. We have emphasised the importance of using strong language and subject-specific vocabulary to make their arguments compelling. Additionally, we introduced the concept of sequencing events to ensure their reasoning is logical and coherent. Through various activities, students practised organising their thoughts and constructing persuasive statements, helping them gain confidence in influencing others through their writing.

In Week 5, our students also had the exciting opportunity to participate in a Stage 1 incursion hosted by Meerkat Productions. The performance was based on the book Timeless by Kelly Canby and vividly brought to life the importance of managing time and making lasting memories. The students were fully engaged in the production, which sparked thoughtful discussions about the value of cherishing moments and making the most of their time.

Mathematics - Tinmen

In Mathematics we have been learning about length. Students have explored a range of formal and informal units of measurements. We have practised our estimating skills as well as how to use a thirty centimetre and metre ruler. Students have compared the length of a range of items finding the shortest and the longest. We found a range of objects that were smaller than, longer than and about the same as a metre. We also investigated how to find one eighth of a length.

In the next three weeks, students will be exploring the concept of time as a unit of measurement. Students will be describing, comparing and ordering durations of events, and reading half- and quarter-hour time.

Health

In Health, students have been exploring well-being, self-care and emotions.

Students have been learning to identify different emotions linked to different situations  and ways to regulate emotions using red light, green light strategies. Students have also explored how to live a healthy lifestyle, enjoying activities that ensure the well-being of body and mind.

Religion

Over the last few weeks, the students have been learning about missionary work and how to support people in third world countries, with a focus on Mongolia. The students unpacked a scripture passage from the book of Luke 1:37, ‘For I can do all things through Christ’ and designed a poster to teach others about serving those in need. The students were able to explore and understand that the smallest act of kindness, almsgiving and donating to charities can impact the world greatly.

Stage 2

English: Book Week

Last week, St Luke’s celebrated Book Week. How great does each class in Stage 2 look! The students participated in a lot of Book Week activities throughout the week. Students completed short stories, wrote book reviews, wrote book summaries and many more. Reading is definitely magic!

Mathematics

In Year Four, students are diving into a mathematics unit centred around multiplication and division. They are exploring more challenging multiplication problems using the area model, a visual method that helps them break down complex calculations into the numbers' individual place value.  This approach not only deepens their understanding of multiplication but also builds their confidence in tackling larger numbers.

In Year Three, students are working on a unit centred around data. They are exploring ways to collect, organise, and interpret data including creating bar graphs, using tally marks, and comparing their results.

Religion

In Year 3, we have been exploring how we can demonstrate the Catholic Values in our everyday lives through mission. The last week we have been exploring our emotions and how we can manage our emotions through self regulation. The year 3 students have been working very hard on implementing some amazing strategies that help them regulate their emotions, and have had the opportunity to create and design their own regulation posters. The students have designed posters for each class across K-4 to display in each classroom’s calm corner to help other students.

Other: Geography

This Term, Year 4 in Geography have been learning about Australia and its neighbouring countries. Students have now started their final project, where each group is given a focus state/territory and will research a given natural landmark. Students will all play a part in writing notes about their landmarks to share with others!
