Term 2 Week 7                                                                                                  5 June 2026

From the Principal

Hi Everyone,

Winter has begun and what beautiful weather we've had this week. It was fantastic weather for our Student Council Spirit Day - House War Cry Day! It has been a truly great day with so many of our children supporting their house teams by dressing up in their colours and practising the war cries - our staff did too! It is great preparation for next week's Senior Athletics Carnival on Tuesday.

Yesterday, we were also celebrating sport! We had Olympians Ariane Titmus and Ria Thompson, and Paralympian Brendan Hall come to Ironside for Olympics Unleashed!!! How incredible is that? These sporting greats, along with the President of Brisbane 2032, Andrew Liveris OAM, Ian Chesterman AM, Chairman of the Australian Olympic Committee and Mikayla Jaworski, the International Olympic Committee Coordination Commissioner for Brisbane 2032 were on a panel answering questions and inspiring us all to reach for the stars!! Thankfully they also spent a lot of time signing their autographs for everyone too. Huge thank you to them all for coming. Thank you to Mr Jorma Bushnell for organising this amazing morning! Brisbane 2032, here we come!

We had Mrs Louise Benecke from Writer’s Toolbox with us today. Louise was in different classrooms modelling for our teachers, so they got to watch an expert in action in Louise. The children really enjoyed it and our teachers no doubt took a lot from it too.

Our Year 5s were very excited this week because they got to touch base with the author Kiah Thomas who wrote the book The Callers. They have been studying this book in class and love it, so it was a wonderful opportunity to hear from the person who wrote it. Thank you so much to Mrs Annika Savauge organising this wonderful incursion to support our children's learning.

Speaking of excitement, our Year 1s got to go to Nudgee Beach. They were full of joy and stories when they returned. This is another excursion that, although is a lot of fun, very much supports the learning that they are undertaking this term. Thank you so much to our Year 1 Team for organising this fantastic excursion.

I have been working with our Indigenous Students, busily putting together NAIDOC (National Day of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Day of Celebration) for 2026. We are celebrating NAIDOC on our last day of term. Next week, you will receive a letter that I put out to you about our children getting to see the incredible Indigenous talent of Tjupurru. Please keep a look out for this.

Congratulations to all our P-3 Merit Award recipients on assembly this week, we are so proud of you.

The Year 2 Choir did a beautiful job of performing on assembly and entertaining us this week, they are honestly so amazing. Congratulations and thank you to them and Mrs Marianne Huxley. Next week we will have the Year 4-6 Merit Assembly, and our Senior Strings will be playing.

At assembly, our Green Team did a wonderful presentation, inviting out students to start thinking about Nude Food, when it comes to lunch boxes. At the moment the Green Team is only asking one thing of all our students and that is to start taking home any rubbish that they produce. This will start to get students thinking about what it would take to make their lunch box ‘Nude.’ One of our Green Team Ambassadors has put together information about Nude Food and will have a dedicated page in our newsletter, watch this space! Ultimately, Nude Food promotes rubbish free lunchboxes, which also helps to encourage children to make better choices about what goes into their lunchboxes. Food that doesn’t come wrapped in plastic, is generally lower in fat, sugar and salt. Healthy Earth = Healthier us.

Under 8’s Day is coming up in week 10 on Wednesday the 24th of June. Under 8’s Day is where we celebrate all our little ones under 8. It is such a pivotal time in a child's life, those first 7 formative years. This year the theme is 70 years - Blast from the Past! It goes from 9:15am until 11am. We are looking for some helpers, in the forms of stalls coffee van, etc. If you want to be a part of it, can you please contact me on akell58@eq.edu.au It is going to be a wonderful day.

Next week our Chess Teams will be competing again at Wilston state school. We wish them all the very best and can't wait to hear how they went.

We also have several of our children sitting APSMO again next week - Australian Primary School Maths Olympiad. We wish them all the very best and hope they enjoy it.

Next Thursday night, 11th June at 6pm is our Year 4 Camp Parent Information Night. This is a great opportunity for the parents of year 4 to find out exactly what happens at camp and get prepared. We hope to see you there.

We have welcomed some new cleaners to Ironside. Welcome to Beatriz Fabri, Aliv Faizal and Desi Safriana. We are thrilled to have these three wonderful people join us.

I will finish by stressing the importance of next Tuesday's P&C Annual General Meeting (9th of June at 6:30pm in our staff room). This is an AGM and our current executive will be stepping down. It will then be time to elect three new people to our positions - President, Secretary and Treasurer. I know people will be tired after the Senior Athletics Carnival but please come along and put your name forward for one of these positions, to keep our P&C alive.

Have a wonderful week.
