The Power of Positive Teacher-Student Relationships

At Brighton Beach Primary School, we know that positive relationships are at the heart of successful learning. When students feel known, valued and supported by the adults around them, they are more likely to engage in learning, take on challenges and develop a strong sense of belonging at school.

Our recent Attitudes to School Survey (AToSS) results highlighted this strength within our school community, with high levels of positive endorsement in areas such as school connectedness, emotional awareness and regulation, student voice and agency, and stimulated learning. These results reflect the strong relationships that exist between students and staff and the deliberate work that takes place every day to create safe, supportive and engaging learning environments.

At BBPS, our Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS) framework provides a consistent approach to building positive learning cultures across the school. Teachers focus on establishing clear expectations, predictable routines and positive classroom environments where students know what success looks like and feel confident to participate. Consistent classroom routines help maximise learning time, reduce anxiety and create a sense of safety and belonging for all students.

Research consistently shows that positive reinforcement is one of the most effective ways to encourage desired behaviours. A key principle within our approach is aiming for a ratio of at least four positive interactions for every corrective interaction. This means students regularly receive encouragement, acknowledgement and feedback about what they are doing well. Whether it is recognising effort, celebrating kindness, acknowledging persistence or highlighting positive choices, these interactions help build students' confidence, motivation and connection to school and importantly appreciate that 'mistake making is necessary' and reflection is how we learn.

Strong teacher-student relationships do not happen by chance. They are built through daily interactions, genuine care, high expectations and a commitment to understanding each child as an individual. By fostering positive relationships and creating supportive classroom environments, we are helping students develop not only as learners, but as confident, resilient and connected young people.

We thank our staff and families for the important role they play in nurturing these relationships and contributing to the positive culture that makes Brighton Beach Primary School such a special place to learn and grow.
