Kinder/Year 1

After reading the book Grace’s Mystery Seed by Juliette Sampson, our Kindergarten children explored their own mystery seeds, making predictions about what they might grow into. They discussed what seeds need to grow, then planted and carefully tended to them each day.
Our writing focus for the first half of the term has been based on the children’s ideas, knowledge, and daily observations of their growing seeds. Students have used a range of classroom learning tools to support their writing, including heart word posters, sound charts, emoji magnets, and sentence editing checklists. Throughout this process, they have developed their vocabulary and strengthened their understanding of nouns and verbs within sentences.
The children were thrilled to take their mystery seeds home and continue their growing journey. We hope they are now tucked away somewhere warm and well cared for.
Have you guessed what our mystery seed might have been?

Meanwhile, in the Stage 1 class, we have been busy writing about our animal friends all term. We have created life cycles, written information reports and even had fun recreating fables about animals after reading various folktales around the world. We have been experimenting with new vocabulary in our texts (just like real authors do) and adding interest through verbs and adjectives. We discovered we now need quotation marks (speech marks) to be able to show our readers what a character says out loud. Mrs McCallum has gradually released the responsibility over to us, so we can grow in our writing and not be reliant on her for prompts as often. Here are some of our fables ( training wheels off!) .
