Literacy News around SMDP
We have had a busy semester so far with a lot of rich learning. Prep to Year 2 students enjoyed learning all about letters, sounds and words during their InitiaLit lessons. They read beautiful picture books that built their vocabulary and supported them to write clear sentences and increasingly confident stories.
In Years 3–6, students participated in novel studies, which are extended reading units where students explore a chapter book in depth, discussing characters, themes and vocabulary, and developing their comprehension through rich conversations and activities. The Year 3/4 students loved exploring Matilda by Roald Dahl and finished Term 1 with a viewing of the movie and a popcorn afternoon. The Year 5/6 students enjoyed the novel War Horse by Michael Morpurgo and are now delving into the humour and silliness of Ratburger by David Walliams.
This term we are assessing the learning we have completed over the last two terms. PAT (Progressive Achievement) testing in Reading and Maths is currently underway. All classes are also completing an independent narrative writing task using a picture prompt. In addition, all students are being assessed using the DIBELS assessment. Together, these assessments provide valuable information about how our students are progressing and growing and help us determine the next steps in their learning.
I would like to thank the hardworking staff and students at our school and the supportive parents and caregivers in our community for your ongoing partnership in your children’s learning.
