Assistant Principal's Report

Over the past two weeks, Burwood East Primary School has been filled with exciting opportunities for students to Learn, Create, and Inspire. Students across all year levels have had the opportunities to participated in extracurricular activities, proudly showcased their learning and talents during our Education Week Assembly, and extended their learning through a range of excursions, incursions, and engaging school activities.
Year 3 In Focus
Last Thursday, we were delighted to welcome parents into our Year 3 learning space. Families gained valuable insight into our literature study on Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon, how whiteboards are used to support learning, and our school’s approach to developing vocabulary, comprehension, discussion skills, and critical thinking.
The students also shared their maps of Australia, highlighting the emblems, flags, flora, fauna and landmarks of each state and territory which they have been investigating as part of the inquiry big idea ‘I am a Tourist’.
Year 3 In Focus was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Year 3s and the rich learning taking place each day. Thank you to our dedicated Year 3 teachers and students for sharing their enthusiasm and pride in their learning. We also extend a thank you to our families for joining us and sharing in these valuable learning opportunities and celebrations.
John Monash Science School – Little Scientist
Last week, Daniel, Luke, Anna, Aiesha and I had the pleasure of attending JMSS Science Fair, where a wide range of scientific, mathematical, and inquiry-based learning was on display from both primary and secondary aged students. Our Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 Little Scientist groups impressed attendees with the confidence and clarity they demonstrated when presenting their hypotheses, observations, results, and reflections on their learning journey.
The student investigations explored real-world problems, such as ‘Bones and Beyond’ looking at the similarities and differences between human bones and fish bones, and testing cabbage water and its effectiveness as a pH indicator. This experience, along with our partnership with John Monash Science School has engaged and inspired our students to be curious and innovative. We thank our JMSS Year 10 student mentors for providing guidance and support and congratulations to all participating BEPS students, Stephen, Kira, Sanvitha, Charlotte, Ananya, Madelyn, Ishya and Anika. Many thanks to parents for their ongoing support of the JMSS program and for sharing in this experience.
Attitudes to School Survey (Years 4-6)
Burwood East Primary School values student voice as a key component to supporting us in improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction. The AToSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist our school in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experiences of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, bullying and life in general. Students from Years 4 to 6 at our school are invited to participate in the survey.
The survey takes around 20-45 minutes to complete and occurs during your child's class time. The survey results will be reported back to the school in an aggregate form throughout the survey period. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only, so that no individual student can be identified. This data is invaluable in providing student feedback which enables us to continue to develop our approaches across the school in learning, wellbeing and student health. Further information has been provided to parents of children in Years 4 – 6 via Compass, including the option to opt out.
National Reconciliation Week
Burwood East Primary School recognises National Reconciliation Week, held annually from 27 May to 3 June. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. This matters because reconciliation supports safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments for children and young people.
The theme for 2026 is ‘All In’. It is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. ‘All In’ means everyone is included. It is a call to take part, take action and drive change.
Our Monday assembly will highlight some students key understandings of this important event.
Have a great week,
Edwina and Teri
