The Truganina P-9 College library is more than just a room full of books — it's a space where students discover, grow, and fall in love with reading. This year, some wonderful changes have transformed how our students experience the library, and the impact has been felt right across our school community.

Buddy reading has been one of the standout successes. Each library session, our Grade 6 students partner with Foundation children to help them find, read, borrow, and return books. What's grown out of these sessions is something special — friendships, confidence, and a shared excitement for stories.

The Grade 6s have stepped into their role as mentors with kindness and patience, and our Foundation students are flourishing because of it.

We're also incredibly grateful for the lessons and activities our librarian, Miss Robinson, has planned for us. She's taught us not to judge a book by its cover — and to step out of our reading comfort zones. Through her, we've explored genres we'd never have picked up on our own, learning to give books a real chance before deciding. She encouraged us to read the first few pages and swap with a partner, which led to a brilliant realisation: the books we almost passed over often turned out to be the ones we couldn't put down. That lesson has stayed with us — and not just for reading. It's made us think twice before judging anything, or anyone, at first glance.

These changes have helped students of all ages engage with reading in fresh, joyful ways. More than anything, they've shown us that kindness and curiosity are the heart of every great reading journey.

What our Grade 6 students had to say:

"Every session there were five Grade 6 students helping the Foundations in the library — we helped them pick, read, return, and borrow books. It made me feel really happy."

— Chloe, 6A

"Miss R helped me tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction books by showing me lots of examples. My favourite book is Hot Dog! by Anh Do."

— Roham, 6A

"We learnt about different genres of books, and it made me a lot more interested in non-fiction."

— Aadi, 6A

"I love how Miss R takes her time to plan our lessons so we can learn about non-fiction and lots of other genres."

— Sahir, 6A

"I really enjoyed Miss R's lessons. We read the first few pages of a book and swapped with a partner to see if they'd want to borrow it. I learnt not to judge a book by its cover — a book I didn't like at first ended up being one I really wanted to keep reading!"

— Saksham, 6B

"The non-fiction lesson helped me understand how published books can sometimes be more reliable than online sources. It even helped us gather information for our explanation text writing. I feel more confident about learning and improving my writing now."

— Salvation, 6B

A huge THANK YOU to Miss Robinson!
