World Diabetes Day – Thursday 14 November

This week we acknowledge World Diabetes Day, an important reminder about understanding and supporting people living with diabetes.

World Diabetes Day is held every year on 14 November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin in 1922. It was established by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of access to care, education, and early diagnosis.

At Bimbadeen Heights, we have several students who manage diabetes every day. It is important that as a school community we are informed, understanding and supportive of their needs. Living with diabetes can require careful monitoring and planning throughout the day, and our students show incredible resilience and responsibility in managing this.

This year, Diabetes Australia is celebrating the progress being made across the country. In 2025, they’ve invested $40 million in research, launched 1800PREVENT to help reduce type 2 diabetes, expanded their Diabuddies peer support program, and created new partnerships with GroHealth and Youfoodz to make everyday life a little easier for those living with diabetes.

World Diabetes Day reminds us that life with diabetes is about more than numbers. It’s about people, progress, and possibility. Together, we can continue to build a future full of strength, resilience and hope.
