Year 4 Update

Learning Outlook for Weeks 7 & 8
🧠 Maths
In Mathematics during Week 7, students investigated different types of angles by classifying and identifying acute, obtuse, right, and reflex angles in a range of shapes. They learned to use correct mathematical vocabulary to describe interior angles and applied their knowledge by identifying and estimating angles in real-world environments. Students created right-angle templates to compare angles and discussed whether angles were smaller or greater than a right angle. They also explored how tools such as spirit levels and set squares help determine whether lines or objects are straight, square, or perpendicular.
Week 8, students will shift their focus to number patterns in multiplication and division. They will recognise and describe patterns across the 2s–10s, explaining how they grow or repeat, and explore how multiplication and division are related. Students will follow and create simple algorithms to generate number sequences, represent patterns using tables and number lines, and practise predicting future terms using pattern rules. They will use mathematical language to explain their reasoning and work collaboratively to identify, record, and communicate their pattern findings.
📚 English
In English over Weeks 7 and 8, students will be focusing on strengthening their sentence structure and vocabulary knowledge. They will identify and construct complex sentences using correct punctuation, with a particular focus on using commas accurately. Students have also been learning to recognise an author’s purpose, tone, and message, and explore how descriptive language and adverbs create imagery for the reader. We continued building vocabulary through Latin roots, applying this knowledge to understand unfamiliar words. During narrative writing, students experimented with strong openings and endings, used complex sentences to link ideas, and developed creative solutions when shaping characters and plot events. They will analyse how authors use language to influence readers and apply their understanding of tone, purpose, and language when creating or responding to texts.
💬 SEL
In Week 7, students explored what it means to feel stressed and discussed different strategies that can help them calm down. They described what stress can feel like, identified common stress triggers, and practised positive self-calming strategies.
In Week 8, students will continue to engage in self-calming games and relaxation techniques. They will reflect on how these strategies help their bodies relax and support emotional regulation.
🌏Humanities
In Humanities across Weeks 7 and 8, students have been testing and refining their sustainability designs as part of our Term 4 project. They have improved their prototypes, presented their models to others, and explained the sustainability features included in their work. Students will reflect on their learning, discuss what worked well and suggest future improvements for their designs. Students will present their prototypes and information to the rest of the school in Week 10.
World Kindness Day
Hillsmeade Heroes
All students are now required to wear their school hat during recess, lunch and outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat to school each day.
Just a reminder each class has homework and spelling words each week. Please check class compass pages or contact teachers if you are unsure what needs to be completed and when.
