9B Environmental Fieldwork Excursion

Exploring Environmental Change at St Kilda – Year 9 Humanities Fieldtrip

On Monday 27th October, the Year 9B Humanities class embarked on a fieldtrip to the coastal region of St Kilda. This excursion formed part of their fieldwork task, focusing on environmental change and human impact on natural landscapes.

Students explored key locations including Catani Gardens, the iconic St Kilda Pier and engaged in hands-on fieldwork activities. These included observing coastal features, identifying signs of land use, and assessing waste management practices. Through sketching, surveying, and mapping, students gathered valuable data to support their classroom learning and future assessment.

A highlight of the day was the opportunity to reflect on how human interventions have shaped the coastline. As student Lucas Conrad-Stewart noted, “Even if our beaches look natural, much of it has been modified for human use.” This realisation underscored the importance of understanding both the visible and hidden impacts of development on our environment.

This immersive experience not only deepened students’ geographical understanding but also fostered critical thinking about sustainability and responsible environmental management.
