Learning and Teaching

Dear LPS families,
Supporting Successful Transitions at LPS
At Lysterfield Primary School, we know that a smooth and confident start to a new year sets the tone for student success. That’s why our transition program is thoughtfully designed to support every learner, from our newest Prep students to those moving through the junior, middle and upper years.
Transition for our 2026 Preps
Our Prep transition program is comprehensive, beginning early in the school year and building familiarity step by step.
Families and future preps are welcomed into a range of engaging activities that help them get to know our school environment, staff, and routines. These include:
- Taste of Prep: a fun, hands-on introduction to life in Prep.
- Teddy Bear Maths Evening: where children explore early numeracy with their families and, of course, their teddy bears.
- Story Time with the Principals: a warm and reassuring opportunity to meet our leadership team while enjoying great stories and craft.
- Classroom and Specialist Transition Sessions: structured experiences that build confidence and routine.
All of this leads to Orientation Day, where students spend time in their actual 2026 classroom, meeting their 2026 teacher and new classmates. This final step ensures our new Preps arrive on Day One feeling excited, settled, and ready to learn.
Transition for current LPS students
For students already enrolled at LPS, transitions are equally important. We want every child to feel confident about the year ahead, academically, socially, and emotionally.
Students participate in:
Two UP Sessions: These sessions give students a chance to “move up” to their next year level and experience learning with teachers currently teaching that level. They engage with real content from that curriculum area, helping them understand what learning will look like and reducing any uncertainty about the step ahead.
Two Meet the Teacher & Class Sessions: These sessions take place in their actual 2026 classroom with their 2026 classmates and teacher. This early connection builds relationships, supports belonging, and lays the foundation for a strong start to the new year.
We are also delighted to welcome new students joining LPS in 2026 into these sessions so they can begin forming connections and settle into our school community before the year even begins.
Why Our Transition Program Matters
Consistent, meaningful transition experiences help students:
- Feel secure and confident in their new environment
- Understand expectations and routines
- Build relationships with teachers and peers
- Approach the new year with excitement, not anxiety
- Engage more deeply in learning from day one
At LPS, we are proud of the careful planning and warm welcome that underpin our transition program. Whether students are stepping into Prep or stepping up to a new year level, we are committed to ensuring that every child feels known, supported, and ready to thrive in 2026.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Kristine Roose | Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching
