From the Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,

Morning Supervision Reminder

Our school grounds are supervised from 8:45am each morning. Recently, we’ve noticed a growing number of students arriving earlier, sometimes as early as 8:30am, to play before supervision begins. While we understand many families have busy mornings, we kindly ask that students do not arrive before 8:45am, as staff are not on duty and it is unsafe for children to be unsupervised.

We appreciate your support in ensuring that all students arrive during supervised times so that everyone starts the day safely and calmly.

Classroom Behaviour and Learning Stronger Than Ever at LPS

Each year, all Victorian government schools participate in the Student Attitudes to School Survey (AToSS). This survey is completed by students in Years 4–6 and provides valuable feedback on their experiences at school, from teaching and learning to wellbeing and classroom behaviour.

At last week’s Outer East Principals’ Forum, David Howes, Deputy Secretary for Schools and Regional Services, spoke about the significant improvements in classroom behaviour across Victorian schools. He explained that when classrooms are calm, students feel safe, learning time increases, and wellbeing improves. A well-managed classroom allows teachers to focus on explicit teaching rather than behaviour management, creating a positive cycle where calm classrooms lead to stronger learning and happier, more confident students.

This message prompted me to look closely at our own data, and the results for Lysterfield Primary School are outstanding.

Exceptional Results for LPS

Our 2025 results show that 93% of students in Years 4–6 reported positive classroom behaviour — significantly higher than:

  • 79% in similar schools
  • 82% across our network
  • 78% across the state

Over the past five years, this measure has steadily increased from 76% in 2022 to 93% in 2025, showing remarkable and sustained improvement.

Students also rated their teachers highly in other areas of effective teaching:

  • Differentiated Learning Challenge: 93%
  • Effective Teaching Time: 89%
  • Stimulated Learning: 83%

These results highlight the powerful connection between positive classroom behaviour, effective teaching, and student wellbeing, a relationship that can be clearly seen in our daily practice.

Why This Matters

While our data has always been strong, improvement of this scale doesn’t happen by chance. The introduction of Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) and the consistent implementation of The Pegasus Way have strengthened expectations, routines and teaching clarity across the school. Our classrooms are calm, purposeful and engaging places where every student knows what to expect and how to succeed.

Our students’ voices confirm what we see every day: Lysterfield Primary School is a place where behaviour supports learning, learning enhances wellbeing, and every child can thrive.

Parking Around Our School

Parking around schools is always a challenge and Lysterfield Primary is no different. Pick-up time can be particularly busy, with many parents needing to leave their cars to collect children.

This week, I received an email from a community member expressing concern about parking near their home, and I’m sure others in nearby streets may feel the same way. Parking like that shown in the image, while illegal, also makes things difficult for our neighbours and creates safety concerns for students and families.

Please keep this in mind and remember our school values of Respect and Kindness when parking around the school. A few extra steps can make a big difference to keeping our community safe and positive.

Have a great weekend,

Adam Wight, Principal
