Year 12 Celebration Day

Celebration Day stretched into Celebration Week this year, with our school captains organising a week of ‘dress-up’ days to bring some amusement and cheer to the final week’s proceedings. In addition to the classic pyjama and uniform swap days, we witnessed some clever new editions of casual dress including “dress as an old person” and “dress for your dream career” days. It was surprising to see so many young people already suited to the knitted sweaters, loose trousers and walking sticks – there’s still an entire career ahead of you!
The week ended with the aptly named Year 12 Celebration Day; a perfect event to conclude our cohort’s time at Thornbury High School. It was a day packed with joy, memories, a few tears, but mainly filled with good times and better company. The students arrived in their most creative and animated costumes; we were privileged to see a group of Ronald McDonalds, Willy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas, the lemurs from Madagascar, a 4-pack of beer, and many, many more. We even saw perhaps the first costume ever involving a live animal – Tyson and his Jack Russell, Kai, dressed as Ghostbusters; so cute! Even the teachers went above and beyond to join in the fun and dress up with their students. The Halloween-themed costumes of the VCE team were a spooky touch, and the presence of the Grim Reaper and one scary, red-headed Clown were a terrifying sight!
Throughout the day the students were able to share many laughs, enjoy good food, sign each other’s T-shirts for memorabilia, partake in the annual fashion parade in front of the school, before proceeding to the auditorium for one, final assembly. Here, the student-voted awards were dished out, encompassing categories such as most iconic duos, most likely to become famous, best hair, and many more. The students were then able to read the letters they wrote in Year 7 to their future selves, whilst watching a beautiful video directed by Mr. Baron that interviewed select students reading their letters and reflecting on their words – a truly moving and memorable watch. As we waved goodbye to the students on this day, we could not have imagined a better way to cap off their journey with us.
