Year 5 Highlight

During Religion lessons this term, we have been learning about the Catholic Social Teaching Principle of Solidarity. Solidarity means that we see other people as equals. It means we recognise the responsibilities we have to each other, and we take an active role in helping others. We need to work together and support each other as one human family.

We have also been learning about World Mission Month. In Australia, Catholic Mission run ‘Socktober’ events throughout the month of October.  Socktober started with a simple idea: to combine the universal love for soccer with a powerful cause. Since its beginning, it has grown into a movement that has inspired thousands to take action and make a difference for children around the world.

To recognise this, Year 5 students participated in our very own ‘Socktober’ event. We learnt about children around the world who are less fortunate than us, who are not able to afford things like soccer equipment. They use whatever they can find to make soccer balls because they love the game so much.

On Wednesday 29th October, we worked in small groups to build a ‘sockball’ out of recycled materials like old socks or t-shirts, plastic bags, newspapers, catalogues, bubble wrap and string.

By using a ‘sockball,’ we were able to experience what it might be like for other children who can’t just go to the shops and buy a soccer ball. We felt empathised with them and we also talked about feeling grateful because we live in Australia.

On Friday 31st October, everyone at St. Joseph’s took action by wearing ‘crazy socks’ and donating a gold coin which will go towards raising funds for children in need in Zambia.

It was a fantastic effort and we were able to raise approximately $200!

Well done St. Joseph’s! We thank you all for your support :)
