DBL: ‘The Rock Cycle - Candy Experiment’

Our Year 4 students recently took part in a hands-on science activity to deepen their understanding of the rock cycle — using candy! This fun and engaging experiment helped students visualise how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are formed through different natural processes.

Students began by “weathering” and “eroding” pieces of coloured candy, representing sediments. These were then “compacted and cemented” together to form sedimentary rocks. By applying gentle heat and pressure (using their hands), students transformed their candy creations into metamorphic rocks. Finally, by melting and cooling the candy (teacher demonstration), they were able to observe the formation of igneous rocks!
