A message from Mr Steed

Congratulations Mrs. Bronwyn Cook – Sydney East Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) – Life Membership
I would like to extend our congratulations to Mrs Bronwyn Cook, our 5C classroom teacher, on her recently receiving Life Membership of the Sydney East Primary School Sports Association (PSSA). This life membership is an incredibly well-deserved recognition of Bronwyn’s long term commitment to primary sport in schools and the opportunities that it provides for our young people to connect, participate and thrive.
Bronwyn has been a stalwart of the Botany Bay Zone PSSA as a long-standing Senior Vice President and has been instrumental in the operation and convening of netball, softball and Oztag PSSA competitions for many years, as well as the comprehensive organisation of Botany Bay PSSA Zone swimming, athletics and cross country carnivals.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Bronwyn’s commitment to the young people of Hurstville PS and the young people from across NSW through her deep commitment to primary school sport and, in particular, the many years of representation as a PSSA officer at Zone, Regional and State level sporting events.
Congratulations again, Mrs Cook, on being awarded Life Membership of the Sydney East Primary School Sports Association (PSSA).

Official Opening - Sensory Play Space – Friday 28 November – 2pm at the Sensory Play Space site
I would like to invite all members of our school community to the official opening of the Hurstville Public School Sensory Play Space at 2pm on Friday 28 November 2025 at the play space site.
We have extended an invitation to the official opening of the Sensory Play Space to our Federal and State representatives, as well as Counsellors from Georges River Council. We have also invited a number of members of the local community who have donated to the project over the past year to thank them and to acknowledge their generosity.
The installation of the Sensory Play Space at Hurstville PS is a wonderful acknowledgement of the deep collaboration that exists between Hurstville Public School, the Hurstville Public School Parents and Citizens Association, members our local Hurstville community who have so generously donated and the support of the State Government via the Community Building Partnership Grants program.
The Sensory Play Space provides enriching experiences that stimulate children’s senses, promote exploration, and encourage social interaction and creative expression. It’s a place where students can develop cognitive, emotional, and social skills while having fun in a safe and engaging environment.
Key Features of the Sensory Play Space:
• Layout and Design
o Open, flexible areas for free movement and exploration.
o Zoned spaces dedicated to tactile, auditory, visual, and olfactory experiences.
Sensory Stations:
o Tactile Zone: Pathways with varying textures such as rubberised matting and
artificial grass, totem pole-style tactiles, a large freestanding abacus, and a bridge to
connect zones.
o Textured Walls: Panels with soft, rough, and bumpy materials for touch exploration.
o Auditory Zone: Outdoor musical instruments, including drums and a xylophone, for
sound and rhythm play.
o Visual Zone: Brightly coloured, vibrant tactile panels and equipment to capture
attention and invite play
Forest Road Airlock Gate – Safety Update
Over the weekend, the Department of Education installed a new airlock (dual) gate at the Forest Road pedestrian entrance. This upgrade supports our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure school environment.
The internal gate includes a child-safe latch, positioned above a child’s reach. This week, the internal gate has remained open to help students and families adjust. From next week, the internal gate will be locked during school hours.
What families need to know:
Students arriving after 9:15 am must be accompanied by an adult to enter through the Forest Road gate.
Late-arriving students must attend the front office with an adult to collect a late slip, as per our usual procedure.
Thank you for your support as we introduce these enhanced safety measures for our students.

2026 Class Placements and Structure - Term 4 Reminder
Each year during Term 4, our school leadership and grade teams dedicate significant time to planning the class structure, staffing, and student placements for the upcoming school year. We have now started the process for 2026.
When organising classes, many factors are taken into account to ensure the best possible outcomes for every child. Alongside the NSW Department of Education’s guidelines regarding class sizes at different year levels, we also consider:
- Academic achievement levels
- Special needs (High Potential and Gifted, Learning and Support, special assistance)
- EAL/D status (length of time learning English)
- Medical concerns
- Relationships that should be maintained or separated (teacher–student, student–student)
- Behavioural issues or concerns
- Relevant family circumstances
- Students receiving additional funding support
- Current referrals to the Learning Support Team
Teacher allocation
If you have specific concerns about your child’s placement relating to any of these factors, please contact one of our Deputy Principals, Ms Russell, Mrs Saad or Mr Renshaw, by phone or email as soon as possible. Waiting until the start of the new school year to raise these matters is too late.
We are committed to doing our very best for every student and appreciate your support with this process.
By the end of this term, a proposed class structure will be finalised. However, as always, we will review and adjust the overall class structure in the early weeks of the new school year, once all 2026 enrolment information is confirmed.
