Grade 5

Literacy

Students have continued exploring The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, deepening their understanding of its themes of courage, compassion and environmental responsibility. Using April’s story as inspiration, they have been crafting persuasive texts that encourage others to take action to protect polar bears and their habitats. Through this process students are learning to strengthen their arguments with facts, emotive language and powerful vocabulary. They are developing their ability to write with purpose and passion, using their words to inspire positive change for our planet.

Numeracy

In Mathematics students have been learning about percentages and how they connect to fractions and decimals. They are discovering that these three forms represent the same value in different ways and are practising how to convert between them. Through hands-on activities and real-life examples students are applying their understanding to compare quantities, solve problems and interpret everyday uses of percentages. This learning is helping them build strong number sense and see the practical applications of mathematics in daily life.

Humanities

In Humanities students have been exploring the difference between needs and wants. They have been learning that needs are the things we require to live, such as food, water and shelter, while wants are things that make life more enjoyable but are not essential.

Through class discussions and activities students have been reflecting on their own lives and considering how people’s needs and wants can vary across different communities and situations. This learning is helping students develop a deeper understanding of the choices people make and the factors that influence them.
