Year Four

Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families,

The students have worked very hard this week and have settled well after having a free day on Monday. This week has been National Action against Bullying, the Year 4's have interacted with a video created by fellow students to engage in conversation about being an upstander.

It has also been National Science Week.  During STSS the students decoded the mysteries of the Sun, as they explored the mysteries of the universe. The they took part in a virtual experiment where they had to predict which colour crayon would melt the fastest when it was heated in a controlled environment.  They found out brighter colour  crayons took longer to melt than a black crayon.  The students work is in their STSS Google Classroom, which students can access from home with their school user name and password, if you would like to see and discuss their learning.

Next week we are learning about...

Its Book Week  so lets "Book an Adventure!"  We begin the week with a Parade of the students dressed in their book character costumes beginning at 9am on Monday.

English Focus

After the Book Week Parade on Monday, students will take part in Book Week Activities involving books nominated for Book Week Awards by the Children's Book Council of Australia.

Then, throughout the week, students will continue to compare and contrast the book and the movie of The Wild Robot.

During writing, the students are continuing their exploration of Advertisement and formal letter writing using persuasive and emotive language to encourage all households to adopt a robot like Roz.

Mathematics Focus

The students will be learning about and comparing equivalent fractions using shapes and parallel number lines.

Social/ Emotional Learning & RRRR

In our unit 'Gender norms and stereotypes' students are learning about violence, including when people say mean things to others or try to hurt them. We are doing this to understand what violent or unsafe behaviour is so we can recognise when it may have been used by ourselves or by others.

Religious Education Focus

On the evenings of August 20th & 21st, parents are invited to one of the Parent and Child First Communion workshops for those students participating.  To support this important faith journey, at school students continue learning about the Rosary, their third session, on Thursday with Mary Schulberg.  The students will also learn about the sacraments, including Baptism, Holy Orders and Matrimony.

Integrated Studies Focus

The students are continuing to reflect on their visit from the RSPCA and the ethics of caring for animals.  They will then make connections by understanding the word 'Empathy', how we navigate relationships with others and how being empathetic creates growth.  This is also witnessed and explored in the current literature students are reading in the classroom.

Auslan Focus

This week we retrieve handling signs which show how we hold, open or close, or use an object; headshaking to show the opposite & visual signs to show actions.
